Got a weird bug that's just happened:

This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.

They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.

Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.

I tried deleting the icon cache file file but it didn't fix it.
I also tried installing a new software and it too did not get an icon created in the menu.
However, if I pin it to start menu the app's icon works there.

Well an update to one of the unaffected apps was available in Store today. I ran the update and watched as the icon for Music disappeared during install.
Looks like whatever is broken is to do with the generation of the icon during install or something.

I've tried running wsreset.exe and sfc /scannow to no affect.

So, I did a little bit more digging into reasons why newly installed/updated programs icons would mess up on the All Apps window only and it turns out it was because I used WinAero's Windows Shortcut Overlay editor a while back.

Well, to be accurate, it seems something went wrong AFTER I successfully used it because I just re-applied it, rebooted and they all came back. I can only assume the change was subverted by either a Windows update or another program.

Glad I sorted it!

I lost 42 apps, just poof disappeared. They showed under "Your Apps" as uninstalled, but they wouldn't reinstall. I tried every fix I could find short of the refresh because I didn't want to lose my installed programs. My son had recently installed a game on my laptop and noticed something strange. He mentioned it to me, and I looked and my user was "hidden". I unselected the "hidden" box under "Properties" for my user, and as soon as the changes were applied (took about 6 minutes) EVERYTHING was back to normal! From the desktop, I went to the File Explorer, to OS(C:)/Users, right clicked on my user name (You may have to select "Show Hidden in "View") and selected "Properties", deselected the checkbox for "Hidden" and selected "Apply" and its fixed!

Hello, ScarletLin. Welcome to Windows EightForums. :)

Thanks for sharing your solution. That’s awesome. :thumb:

With 42 apps you must have one hell of a Start Screen! ;)
