Moving Pointer and Charms Appear

Just started working with Windows 8. I find that the Charms frequently come onto the screen when I begin to move the pointer via the touch pad. Anyone else having this problem; do you know how to fix it? Thanks.

I guess you are saying that this occurs when not in the charm bar activation area, right?

That's correct. It doesn't where the pointer is when I start to move it; the Charms come onto the screen.

That's sort of a bummer. I have a tiny bit of the opposite problem. I mainly use 8 via my MacBook Pro and remote desktop connection--because my older PC laptop, on which 8 is installed, is awkward to use compared to he MacBook Pro. In this regard, activating the charm bar is a little "sensitive."

But, enough about me. Basically, how did you install or end up with 8?

Windows 8 was loaded on the Acer laptop I bought.

Was there ever a time when the charm thing worked correctly--out of the box? If not, you could return the machine to Acer if there still is time. Also, did Acer provide any system recovery media, including a recovery partition? If so, then you could do a recovery back to factory fresh assuming the charm thing worked properly initially. You'd need to back you files, downloaded installers, etc., up first of course. You also might be able to do a system restore back to before the problem began.

The issue seemed to start right after I downloaded MS Office 2010 Pro. I just bought the laptop, so it could always go back to Best Buy.

I have not heard of problems with that version of Office. You could try one of the things I mentioned in my last post. Office will be uninstalled. Then, you could see if the problem still is present. I'll be gone for awhile.

I think part of your hand is brushing up along the right side of the touchpad and activating the charms bar. Perhaps overly sensitive touch pad which is common.

Try decreasing the zone in the touch pad settings in the mouse area.

I think you're correct dirtyvu. I now notice that if I swipe from the right side of the touch pad, the charms come out. Thanks.

There's a setting in mouse properties which allows one to turn off the actions resulting from swiping from the edge of the touch pad.

Interesting. I found that some touch pads support edge gestures. Look at your touchpad settings to see if you can change the options so that what is happening is more friendly to you. Some have suggested updating touch pad drivers so that the full set of options is available. On my touchpad, I always have to disable tap to select immediately upon installation. I have that feature.
