Solved docx files not showing Microsoft Word icon

I have installed Microsoft Office 2010 on my new Windows 8 computer, but the docx files do not have the correct icon. I've tried repairing, uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Office, but I am still having the same problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello Deposit,

Double check in Default Programs to make sure that Word is set as the default program with all of it's associations, and see if that sorts it afterwards.

Thanks for the reply. I tried using "Set your default programs", but Microsoft Word didn't appear (Outlook was the only MS Office program in the list). Then I tried "Set Associations" and .docx files are set to open in Word, but there's still no MS Word icon on .docx files when I view them in Windows Explorer.

You might see if right clicking on the .docx file and on "Open with" to select Word may toggle the icon to return.

If not, then you might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help.

If still not, then you might see if using either option in the tutorial below to manually change the icon of .docx files to use the icon of the Word .exe file.

None of those methods worked, but I made a new profile and the problem appears to have been solved. Thanks for the suggestions.

I have exactly the same problem. Two questions:
- do Microsoft know or care about this Windows 8 issue?
- what is this "Made a new profile" action by Deposit which fixed the problem?
