Excel data lost

I've got a Samsung laptop with Windows 8, and I have been working on an Excel document every day for a while. Today I came to my parents' house and logged onto their internet for the first time. I then worked on my spreadsheet, clicked save, closed it and attached it to an email I sent. I went back to check something and there was only a version saved on Monday. I checked the email attachment and that was the old version too. I've tried recent places etc, should I do a system restore?

Many thanks for any help, and if it's not obvious, I'm a total novice.

System restore won't get data from before the restore point back. Are you sure where the latest version was saved? Maybe it's on your machine, and you just don't realize it. You could search on the name of the spreadsheet file.

Thank you, good of you to answer. Already tried your suggestion, nothing working so far and data is important. Not very good with this new windows. Thanks anyway

You are very welcome. I don't suppose that by some miracle you were using File History.

This is brand new computer, not really read the manual through yet. Found this when trying to solve the dilemma. Thanks again.

Wishing you the best. I don't see how the file could just disappear. Have you looked in the recycle bin? Do you have access to desktop icons on your desktop? If you are used to an earlier Win OS, a good way to function, at least initially, is using these icons. Go to desktop, right click on it, choose personalize, and select the icons you want on the desktop, including the recycle bin.

Edit: You could consider using data recovery software. Search on "windows 8 data recovery software" or "windows data recovery software."

wellstuck, I'm having data loss from excel 2010 running on win8 - on saving excel x32 stops responding and it seems like the file I had open gets deleted. In its place(that is in the same folder) is a file without an extension and labelled with eight random letters and numbers, hexadecimal style. It is also the correct size and last edited date. I found if I rename that file with an .xls or .xlsx extension, it will open, and it will include the data from the last save. It's totally frustrating the way it is crashing, but hope this helps restore your data.

Some of those files are hidden (show hidden files) and some are in the users's temp folder (appdata) from what I've seen.

Always make a backup on the latest file you work on. Right click send-to compressed zip folder.
