Apologies I'm new to the forum shall fill in the details when on a desktop.

Zoostorm desktop I7 3770 processor. I'm considering using the disc option which windows 8 offers if I can't fix it.

I think I will yeah. The disc format appears to only be a repair disc. Not sure how much they will want to send me a flash drive with a full recovery on though.

I am having this problem, too. It gets to about 99% or more of the green bar moving to the right of the graphic and then it stalls. I am very frustrated and have even thought about returning this nice little ASUS (ASUS S200E with external CD/DVD) that I bought back to Staples. It also stalled doing the " " " Windows 7 " backup with Recovery included to a portable hard drive.

I have a hard time believing it is smart to own a PC that I have no recovery for.

And it is surprising that :

    1) This isn't showing up all over the net
    2) There isn't a solution posted anywhere

I succeeded in making a backup USB drive this morning. The message that you receive on my ASUS when you start is that the drive has to be at least 16GB in size. I don't have a USB3 stick that large. The backup took over three hours to perform and it now is now listed as using 11GB of the drive.

Based on some of the posts in this thread, I went into the power settings in the control panel as follows.

I searched power in the control panel search window (upper right of the control panel).
I clicked on power options and then changed the "power plan" from balanced to "Power4Gear" and clicked on "Change plan settings". Under the "Plugged in" area I chose "Turn off the display:" - drop down menu - to "Never" and "Put the computer to sleep:" - drop down menu - to "Never".
I then clicked on "Change advanced power settings" then then on the "Hard disk" option "Turn off the hard disk after", "Plugged in:" to 1440.
Then hit the "Apply" box and "OK" box and then "Save changes" button in the screen that denotes "Never" for the display and sleep options mentioned above.
Then I made sure the machine was plugged in and created the recovery on the USB memory stick.

I have no objective way of knowing how much difference these power options made in this transfer of the data to the USB stick.

Next stop is to make recovery DVDs if possbile.

So now more frustration. Windows 7 file recovery gives nothing but errors. One option is to make a system image either on a hard drive or DVDs. Neither worked and the reason is that there is not enough room, even though there is enough room. The external hard drive is an almost empty Seagate 2TB Backup Plus. The DVDs were empty and the reason given was that there wasn't enough room for the shadow copy to be stored. This needs to be about 1GB according to the dialog, yet these were empty 4.7 DVDs !?!

The other backup option offered in Windows 7 file recovery, of a general backup fails over and over. It begins and then ends with no reason given for the failure.

Has anyone figured this one out? I have two Asus laptops and have the same problem with both. Somehow with the first one, after many, many tries I got it to create a recovery USB. Don't ask me how, because I don't know. For the life of me I can't get this new laptop to create a recovery USB. Tried playing around with the power settings without any success. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    windows 8 64 bit

    Experiencing the same issue

I have a brand new Gateway NV76R laptop with Windows 8 64 bit 8GB memory 1TB hard drive spoke with gateway tech he said there is possibly a file missing in the partition, said they would give me disks for free. I read somewhere that you need USB for some of the items, have to wait til Monday to call level 2 support to try and get USB drives for free since it seems to be an OEM issue. Will update with results of that discussion.
