This is a weird one. I installed Skype on my laptop in Win8 and shortly thereafter strange stuff began to happen, for instance my cd tray popped out. At the time I had no idea what was going on and shrugged it off. But then I lost the touchscreen and that bugged me. I have dual boot with Win7 and the touchscreen disappeared on there too. I tried all my old tricks to try to resurrect it booting up back and forth between Win8 & Win 7 the touch would come back for a while and then disappear. Finally on a hunch I started uninstalling recently installed programs. I uninstalled Fanspeed, no difference. When uninstalled Skype my touchscreen came back as good as new! On both OSes. coincidence?

try scanning for viruses,
the popped-up cd tray means a program is accessing your optical drive but cannot find any disc.
why the symptom appears on W7 too? because the virus (maybe) also infect the Windows 7 drive.

As soon as I read your post I slapped my forehead and said to myself well duh why didn't I think of that.
So now 24 hrs later after doing a full scan (not quick scan) with MS Defender Offline off a thumbdrive on Win 7 partition and Win 8 and pci express hdd, nothing turned up. All this with very latest virus definitions.

Maybe a different AV might find something going to look into this some more.

I think I'm going to do my online Christmas shopping from Ubuntu.
