    Installing programs on other than C

    Greetings. This is my first post here, and am happy to have found this forum after searching the web for a better answer to my problem to no avail.

    Basically, because it's just the way I am used to doing things and it helps me to stay organized, I make separate partitions on my HD's for different types of files and programs. I have gone from using Win XP to Win 8 on a newer system, and have been running Win8 64 bit for about 3 weeks now. It is only now that I am beginning to grapple with the idea of 32 bit vs 64 bit applications and where, perhaps I "should" have reinstalled all my old 32 bit programs. My question then...

    Do I really need to go back and reinstall my 32 bit software on the C drive in Programs (x86)?
    What about installing on another drive letter? Does it help to have them in a Programs (x86) folder on say D drive?

    Everything now is just installed where I am accustomed to putting it. Perhaps part of this started when my rebellious nature just wanted to put stuff where I wanted it instead of where Windows wants to put things. I like creating my own hierarchy that I can remember easily. Instead of sifting through an endless list of apps all jumbled together in one programs folder, I can just jump directly to my S drive for my audio applications or M drive for my music. Do I need to unlearn this behavior and start letting Windows install wherever it wants to? How important is this?

    Thanks so much in advance for any educated responses.

    hi randy,

    although i not complety get it, there is not reason why you should not install Win8 on another partition, if you like.

    This will have absolutely no influence on anything at all.

    Used to do so for a very long time.

    Some programs write to the registry.
    As if you refresh/reset windows 8, your programs on the other partition may not be uninstalled. Programs that write to registry will not work correctly.

    Well i ment installing Win8 on another partition, other name then C:, not some programs to swap from one partition to another.

    One must respect the registry of course;
