Microsoft says " It may harm your computer...." One thing I am sure about Windows 8 ,it is very sensitive and its defence mechanism is very weak, anything it does not agree with ...just crashes. So I am very cautious about installing any third party programs (Start programs is definitely one of them)..I hope people will prove me wrong stating that their Windows 8 is living happily with Gadget packs and Start programs... otherwise we will have to learn living without "Start"-"Gadgets" As my son says "if you were so mad about your gadgets-start why the hell did you waste your money by leaving Windows 7" :)

Is there or not any other way than installing 8GadgetPackSetup.msi to show CPU usage all the time ?

Thanks for your information. By the way I know this kind of packages might be harmful .

As long as you are not opposed to 3rd party tools there are ways to add this information to your desktop independent of the Microsoft's gadget interface/library. The one I use is Winstep (Winstep Software Technologies - Desktop Themes and Customizing Windows). I've attached an image of the corner of my monitor, with my IP address erased, so that you can see how I've configured some of the Winstep gadgets.

Posted here cus it's the most recent post on the subject..

I started looking for gadgets and ways to make it work in Win 8 because I wanted to use a Defcon gadget.. you know.. N. Korea is threatening the US again with nukes and has missiles that can reach us.. the US is taking this threat more seriously .. so i found this gadget and wanted to use it. I did find this that would allow gadgets to run 8GadgetPack - Gadgets for Windows 8 BUT..

I find it highly irresponsible of Misrosoft to squash the gadget program and MS Gadget repositories instead of stepping up to the plate and FIX the security issues with the Gadget Platform. It was a cheap way to absolve them of responsibility because they were to Lazy to fix the problem right - the more I learn of the draconian ways MS does things the more I am beginning to hate them.

The MS repository is down - is there Any other backup repository to get official MS gadgets?

Perhaps someone should start a thread with a collection of links to all working gadgets.

I understand your fondness for Gadgets, I liked them very much myself, but...

It's not really fair to call Microsoft "draconian" because they didn't want to invest the time and money into fixing gadget security issues. Lots of folks didn't even like Gadgets to begin with. I used to hang out on a Gadgets forum (SFKilla - Home) and the devs told me it would be very easy to write a malicious Gadget if they wanted to. The OS completely "trusts" the Gadget. It's not irresponsible of MS to stop supporting Gadgets if they know they are vulnerable and don't want to bother trying to fix the issue.

It's disappointing to be sure, but not irresponsible or draconian. IMHO, of course...

WiFi Ed, I don't have any great love for gadgets.. it's just now that I have a good computer I've decided to use some. Microsoft's reason for taking away gadgets.. security issues.. well they should remove Internet Explorer too. For that matter.. not let the PC connect to the internet at all. It's the users job to install apps they can trust and safeguard against malicious code. Just because something "can" be used to transmit a virus ( like Internet Explorer) doesn't mean it will. I think this was a ploy to get people more away from the desktop so they could feel more comfortable with the live tiles of windows 8.. and yep.. a real conspiracy. I'll stick to my draconian label. It's not just this issue.. there are lots that make MS draconian like their handling of the UEFI issues on which I have researched and written extensively.

Vrosa thanks for the links I'll have a look at them. One can always get calenders, clocks, CPU meters etc but I'm looking for a good repository with other odd gadgets like the Defcon status gadget. Gadgets that do things that are not the norm.
