Solved My non-working APPS fixed without a Refresh!!

Today I finally had some time to spend three hours on the phone with Microsoft about the APP problems I was having.
Kindle, Weather, Netflix, Xbox, CW TV, MAPS and others----the ones that have to log on....

After an hour the MS tech was puzzled and starting to suggest I do a refresh, but I balked on that and he kept looking. (I had let him on my machine remotely)

The ISSUE was a number of services that were turned off. It is unknown as to whether these services were turned off during the upgrade, because I know I never turned them off. They may have already been turned off in Windows Home Premium. It may be because my upgrade was from Win 7 Home Premium to Win 8 PRO. They are going to investigate further and will update me later by email.

The solution is check your services (Control Panel>>Admin tools>>>Sevices) and turn disabled services to AUTOMATIC and then try the APPS and see if APPS start to work. Change those set to disabled to automatic, try it one by one to find out exactly which ones were hanging up the APPS. I even turned on Apple Mobile devices (be funny if it was the culprit)

Because the MS tech was not keeping track at the moment we could not identify exactly which disabled service(s) was the culprit, but in the alphabetical list I believe we turned from "disabled" to "automatic," everything in the A's and B's...when the APPS started working. Background intelligent transfer should be "Automatic with delayed start."

The MS tech had already tried others but no effect so we started again and after switching all the disabled service in the A's and B's to automatic. We tried it and the APPS were all working.

The best bet is to do it a section of the list at a time. There may some disabled services that you may have already disabled yourself for one reason or another and those you can probably leave disabled.

I think Home Premium win 7 already had numerous services turned off by default. I could now (if I have time,) experiment and figure out exactly which service it was that was hanging it up.

The MS tech went ahead and turned most everything disabled in the rest of the list to "automatic."
With each change you push "restart " in the service menu (to get to the Service menu double click the service) and let each service you changed "restart." Important to do this restart after making the change.

Anyway. for those having the problems with APPS, give it a try.

MS was very helpful. They didn't have the answer beforehand but they said they are working on these issues. This was an easy fix in reality. Glad I didnt have to do a refresh only to find the same issues happening again like some people.

Did you change the manual start items to automatic as well? I only have 5 services that are disabled and none of them are in the "A's and B's" as you mentioned were the in the section where you believe contained the issue.

No. Only disabled ones. When I said A's and B's I was guessing as that was how it appeared but the MS tech was moving fast.

Try the others see if it works.

It doesn't hurt to start at the beginning and go to all the Automatics and Automatic with delay and restart them. It is possible that a service required a restart. I bet you will fix it...worked like magic for me.

Thanks for the response again rialcnis. None of the disabled services did anything for me by turning them on. I will try the long process of restarting all the services tomorrow.

If you do an in place upgrade - you may well find services have been disabled.

Antivirus software, Windows Live Mail, third party programs like imaging/disk management programs and so on.

Don't forget "restarting" each one you change by clicking on the service and open up the popup window where you can restart it.

I guess MS needs to work on these little torturous details.

Hi - these are the services that are disabled on my computer:

Internet connection sharing (ICS)
Net.Tcp Port sharing Service
Remote Registry
Routing and Remote Access
Smart Card

Any of these related to the metro apps not working?

Hi again...tried a bunch of them and made sure I restarted them...but no luck. I will keep trying.

I would be willing to post a list of the non-running services on my computer - if you would be willing to look through your services and see if there is something that is off on mine that is running on your yours. It would be nice to pinpoint the exact issue for other people as well.

Possibly.

Here is how those are set on my system after MS worked on it.

Internet connection sharing (ICS)---AUTOMATIC
Net.Tcp Port sharing Service----AUTOMATIC
Remote Registry----AUTOMATIC (Trigger Start)
Routing and Remote Access----AUTOMATIC
Smart Card----AUTOMATIC (Trigger Start)

You double click on the entry and change it to Automatic then click the start button in the box to restarts the service.

If after trying these reboot and try some APPS.

If they don't work, go back and restart Background Intelligent transfer and Background Task. (I say this because the MS tech reclicked it on AUTOMATIC then restarted them.) The "Delayed Start " appeared after boot.
