My Skype account got linked to the People app: Help!

A few days ago, I deleted Skype from my computer completely because I don't want to go back to the community I've been using that particular account on, and frankly would prefer not to use Skype anymore if it's at all possible.

Now, just today, I've noticed that the People app started showing the avatars of the people from that old Skype account, and now it's shown as "connected." I don't even see an option to remove the account.

I'm really, really serious about not wanting to use that account, but I don't know how to remove it, and it's freaking me out that I might appear online in that horrible community due to this.

I'm willing to accept any suggestion for getting rid of it. Do I have to remove the People app entirely, along with other useful applications, if I don't want to be logged into that particular Skype account now? Is there any way I could just create a different Skype account to link instead, even if I don't end up using it?

    Hello there!

In the People app, go to Settings, (Start key + C and hit Settings) click on Accounts, then hit Skype, then hit Manage this account online. You should be able then to remove Skype from your Microsoft account.

Microsoft has announced that Windows Live Messenger is going away, and recent releases of Skype have integrated the Messenger accounts into it. Skype will take over as the Messenger client from now on.

Since Skype and messenger are now linked, that means they are also linked to the People as well (since they are all part of the same database).

As far as I can tell, As of right now, once these are linked, they can't be unlinked except by calling Skype customer service.

One option is that you can hide the Skype contacts from the people app. Go into people, go to settings charm, and then go to Options, uncheck the Skype checkbox.

Well, if Skype is going to be the new Messenger, then I would prefer to use a NEW Skype account rather than the old one that it has picked up and linked. This came at a REALLY bad time for me, I had just uninstalled Skype from most of my computers (except the one I intend to use in the rare event I'm forced to deal with these people) a few days before I started seeing those Skype contacts in the people app, and god only knows if they saw me online as a result of this. This could be hell for a while.

On top of the social problems, Skype has been the buggiest piece of garbage I've ever used, and I only used it because other people did. I just recently stopped caring about that. I really don't like it very much, and I never have, but I'm hoping that Microsoft now intends to improve it since it's taking the place of Messenger.

I've created a new Skype account, and asked customer service to link that account instead of my old one. Until that's resolved, I've uninstalled the People app completely, because I don't want to risk it. I guess I'll just have to use webmail or something until then, because it means no more mail app, too. I'm hoping they can resolve this, or else I may have to create an entirely new Microsoft account, which would be quite a pain.

I really don't know how all this can affect your lifestyle so badly but you were given a solution up there, just remove the account and you'd be set. Other than that, Skype is actually great, I gave up MSN for it and I'm happy to see it constantly advancing.

Eh, it's complicated. I have a lot of "friends" in that community who have given into anarchy now, and like to troll and backstab, and generally create problems. Even if you remove them from contacts and block them, they still find ways to mess with you if they know your Skype name. And also, there are issues I've had with one friend who is unable to see a lot of the chats he's added to, or is unable to see and join a lot of calls. He always thinks everyone is doing it on purpose, and it always turns out to be a glitch. But it's a real strain on our friendship. I don't need people accusing me of things if they see me online but not responding to them. In that community, you need granular control over your appearance.

Anyway, I just talked to Skype technical support today, and they were extremely helpful. They said they'll unmerge the accounts for me, so I can reinstall everything as soon as that's taken care of. So, my problem is solved, and I hope that Microsoft makes Skype better than ever.

old thread but useful. Here's the latest solution to unlink:
    Go to https://secure.skype.com/portal/account/settings
click unlink in the Microsoft line so Skype and Microsoft are no longer connected.
