Using Nice Player under Windows 8

I have a video file with an .avi extension which Windows Media Player should play. Whenever I try to invoke it, I get the message that the file format is not recognizable by Windows Media Player and that I should download "Nice Player" to use it. I downloaded it but I am given no help as to how to install it or use it.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I would certainly appreciate any help I could get.

I find it odd that you would get a message to download a third party player. I would be very suspicious of that.

I have never heard of Nice player. There's a Mac version but not a Windows version.

It could be possible that the .avi is scamming you, where it is not really an avi but something that pretends to be a video file and directs you to that virus to install it.
