Refresh deleted my Apps

I had upgraded to Win 8 pro from Win 7 by digital download from MS and installed on 1 desktop and 2 notebooks. All upgrades went fine. However only the desktop functioned normally. Both the notebooks would not function as expected.

The problem started soon after installation. The Tiles became unresponsive, the screen would blank out when any of the Tiles were clicked. Tried contacting MS support, only to waste 2 hours while the Tech checked settings etc. but to no avail. I was told that I would be transferred up to level 2 support but since I had no more time or patience I have not followed this up till now.

Refresh Windows had been tried once. With no change.

In my infinite wisdom the next day I tried Refresh a second time and lo and behold all my installed Applications (software) vanished including MS Office 2010. Cannot be seen or found by search. The same is the case with notebook no. 2.

At this point I do not care about the tiles etc. just getting my apps and associated data back intact. With Explorer I can see that these program files still reside on the HD. When I tried to invoke them directly by clicking the appropriate .exe files I got the message the " ERROR The operating system is not configured properly to run these applications."

Please any input will be highly appreciated. I am desperate. Thank you

Well this is a new one...

By 'refresh' I think you mean reinstall windows? In that case all of your programs WILL disappear...

The best guess as to why windows 8 doesn't work good is because notebooks aren't fully supported for some reason. There are a few people asking about this, and Microsoft might add in more support in future updates for this.

There was a similar thread where someone posted asking if Microsoft will eventually add support for net books...

Personally I think Microsoft intends to let net books, notebooks and any other similar device die. With the new tablets out, there really seems no need for them it seems. So if your notebooks don't get supported in future updates, you'll know why.

Sorry to say...

Thank you I see this. My question is whether the word Apps here includes installed programs? Are Apps and Programs the same thing to MS?

Yes they are.

Have done a few refreshes on several machines. And it removes everything (including office/Firefox etc) that's not the os or store apps but keeps users and settings.

Apps is how MS wants us be "cool" and call all programs.

Thank you guys. So the answer is to re-install everything! Will the mails and documents still be there?

Why call it Refresh when Re-install would also pretty much do the same thing, only diff would be that Refresh retains old windows as Windows.old and Reinstall will not. Which begs another question, when to and how to remove/delete this folder?

Because refresh keeps all your documents and settings and store apps ( logins etc), where a re install would remove them completely.

To remove Windows.old run the disc cleaner and click system files and it will re run with full admin rights. Old windows will then be selectable for deletion (with all install logs and temp files)

Thank you again. How does this effect us if we have to re-install programs such as MS Office? I mean the serial has to be re-registered and could this not be a problem?

Yes. It is not meant to be an ideal solution.

I think it very sensible of MS to include it.

It is there because many users will not make system images.

A refresh is a bit less traumatic than a reinstall.

A system image is always best.

No one has answered the question that if MS Office is re-installed will the files, settings and mail still be there where it was before the Refresh?

Sorry, I don't use MS Office - maybe someone else can advise .

It depends - I think refresh keeps your user reg hive intact - so if the Office settings are in there - then probably.

Thank you. I am trying it now, as I need to get it up and running once again. I can report that I had to put in the serials again and it was checked online and activated. Will update if I can see files from previous install of Office intact especially mail.

I just had this problem this morning. Every program on my computer is gone except for the Windows Live Crap that I don't use. UGH...so tonight I reinstall the important stuff. I wish when Windows refers to installed programs as apps they would let you know. I'm 67 years old and sometimes the brain doesn't see stuff as quickly as it once did. LOL

You will find all documents, musci, photos intact. All installed programs will be gone so basically you have to reinstall most of the added software

Thanks Bozz. I'v figured that out and I'm glad the files are all intact. That would have been brutal.
Ah well...live and learn. I looked for the System Restore but I just got Windows 8 about a week ago and I couldn't find the system restore. I went looking on this forum this morning and found out where to find it.

Thanks again.
