Solved All Apps keep disappearing from random things.

I can't figure out what keeps causing all apps to not show up when clicked. Then I have to bring up the task manager to get off the screen. Somehow the Metro GUI is extremely sensative to any changes. I've seen them go away from Microsoft.net 3.5 installs, and really just about anything at all seems to knock them out. I even tried sfc scanner and it didn't work either. Restoring to an earlier time seems to be the only thing that fixes this problem. But I did that to later have it eat itself again. This is crazy! I think uninstalling PhysX and reinstalling an older version of it for a game, then reinstalling the latest version has also messed them up. Reinstalling the latest nVidia driver over and over doesn't fix anything either. This is becoming very frustrating!!!! Are nVidia drivers knocking it out? I cannot pinpoint what's messing it up as many things seem to do it. It's an extremely unstable OS.

More to this saga. When I install my Epson 4530 printer driver package, my apps go away. The disc was originally made for Windows 7. Epson has Windows 8 64 bit software too, but it does the same thing. Each time I restore to just before I installed either package my apps come back. Remember, it's only the "All Apps" that are taken away. It seems that drivers have to be Windows 8 certified or this is happening quite a bit with all kinds of installs. Sorry Microsoft, but this is a small nightmare on our hands. I've read about how to fix this, but it's way too many steps for me, and no guarantees. Microsoft just need's to come up with some kind of patches to stop allowing the apps to be hidden like this, and quick. One last thought. Windows installs generic drivers for the printer, so it at least works. I downloaded the scanner software ONLY and it did not break Windows. So, my problems are solved, but why the self-destruction? That has to be figured out.

I too have had my apps listing disappear. First time I refreshed Win8 and, in the process, lost a lot of programs and all my saved emails. Things have been fine but I just used cd to install my Epson Artisan 730 printer and again all the apps are gone. What a pain. I think I will try to uninstall the printer and then just let Win8 use its own drivers as before. I'm just not tech intelligent enough to figure this out. If I lose everything again, I think I'll sue.

As soon as something messes up your apps you can immediately restore to just before you installed that app. It allows you to go just before the install each time in system restore. I'd say Microsoft was very smart to allow that. You have to restore to fix the registry. Uninstalling won't do it. Yeah, as far as that printer problem is concerned, let Windows install the generic printer driver and then install separate parts from the Epson site like the scanner by itself. So no need to sue just yet, but I know how you feel.

Thanks, RobertG. First I had to learn how to find the system restore since my search function didn't work either. But I googled the question, found it and did it. Everything looks good now. Haven't tried to use the printer, but I'm happy to see my listing of apps. Interesting, Epson Scan is still there. The restore took me back to before the Epson Event Manager. Suspect that was the problem.

In any case, many thanks again.

Yes Bob, you are correct about the Epson Event Manager. So a few problems I have encountered remind me of when we first started with Vista. But if we just keep restoring as soon as the problems arise and then do a little research, I guess we are good to go. I believe the real goal of Windows 8 is to bring X-Box, their phones and the Surface tablet all in-line. I don't see this humongous reason to leave Windows 7, but I am a tech junkie, so I don't know what else to do but upgrade! :) I like my Macs, but when it comes to serious gaming, Windows rules. Third party software needs to sometimes catch up. But this is almost a really good experience considering it's a brand new operating system.
