Weird Metro Apps Issue

Hey,

I am new to Windows 8. I kinda like the Modern UI, but sadly now every time I open a Modern App it crashes to Desktop and I have to launch it a second time for it to work ....

I completely disabled UAC and Windows Firewall as I hate them totally annoying. I read on here that UAC is REQUIRED to run Modern Apps ... I can safely say it is NOT the case coz I re-enabled it to no avail still same annoying issue xD

The weird thing is that they work great when I run them from Stardock's Start8 menu ... But if I try to run them from Modern UI they simply just crash xD

I tried every single "Solution" posted here and M$ support community to no avail ....

Any ideas ?

UAC needs to be set to Medium for apps to work correctly.

Make sure a third-party anti-virus program is not hampering your apps.

Make sure that Stardock program is windows 8 compatible

I have the same issue.

1. Fresh load on WIN 8 Pro, Metro/Modern apps like News, Mail, Financial, Photos, etc worked for about a day or so, then they won't open. Checked screen resolutoin, UAC, and I am not using any AV outside of Win Defender and Win Firewall.

2.Reloaded, complete reinstall of Win 8 Pro, same results, apps worked about a day or so then the regular Metro/Modern apps won't open.

3. Called MS Support and they suggested a WIN 8 Refresh. Did that (it took quite a while) and no change, same apps won't open.

MS has a problem that seems to be affecting a lot of folks, just not everyone is seems. They make us start with the Metro start page, you would think they would have gotten at least that right for everyone. Anyway, I supposedly will get a call from a level 2 support person tonight, but I am more apt I think to get the solution in Eight Forums someday.

Oh boy ... They SUCK ... as always ... That is EXACTLY why on my main Rig I will NEVER EVER go to Windows 8 ... Wanted to give it a go but clearly wasn't worth it ... Worst thing since Windows ME ...

Oh well I will keep it on laptop hoping we will get a solution soon xD

with you kind of behavior I will not be surprise you catch something that create your problem

Just a heads up on that, I have been running Windows 7 WITHOUT UAC nor Protection Software or Firewall for 3 years now without any issues ! Plus it is a fresh install barely a few hours old ...

I forgot to mention that I moved my profile to a separate partition (D:\) of the same drive ... I do so to have less to backup prior to a fresh install ... Could that be the issue ?

That said, could not be a malware issue !

Hello Techxero,

Moving your profile could be the issue, try moving it back to C to see if that helps, or test using another account on your computer with it's profile on the default C.

Just a FYI, without any security measures, malware or viruses could easily infect and run on your computer without you ever knowing about it. Do a Google search on "zombie computers". ;)

I did that earlier as I posted last reply ... Still same issue ... And from what I see on Google many many peeps having same exact issue ... Which leads me to exclude Profile location issue ... Coz none of them had moved their profiles ...

As for UAC n Anti-Virus stuff, like I said earlier 3 years with no issues on my Main righ on Win7 x64 is nothing to sneeze at ... I am a Computer Hardware professional, with some software knowledge. I stay away from "Questionable" sites, and do my work "Safely" hence y I do not use the annoying UAC which is pointless anyway, and no AV, coz to be honest from my 20 year experience with computers, found out that they are 99.99% of the time the root of all the problems in the first place coz they tend to take over your System Files to "Protect" them ... I don't think so ...

Anyway that's a different topic altogether ... I need a solution for this issue and so far none worked ... Am starting to think Windows 8 is nothing but a joke ... xD

keep the potential solutions coming ...

Thanks ;)

I think a found a solution. IF you've tried all of the fixes like resolution, etc, and if all the other ideas don't work...try this:

I used Kari's tutorial to move my users folder from my SSD to my HDD. I left Programdata on C:. If you don't have a SSD use C:

Add the special All_Application_Packages userID to this Packages folder security. Right click it, Properties, Security tab, etc.

d:\Users\Brent\AppData\Local\Packages

And give only that folder ALL but FULL control, which is read, list, create, write, etc. (just read and list, execute didn't work);):thumb:
This is the trick that made all my Apps come back. This is MUCH better solution than adding that UserID to your whole C drive or Everyone.

Good luck!:thumb:

No guarantees, but I fixed a somewhat similar problem by creating a new user account. Check it out here--especially post #2.
