Hello Bob, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you have a 3rd party AV or Firewall program installed, then uninstall/reinstall it. Sometimes updating it to the lasts version will help if it's not already.

Double check to make sure that the Windows Firewall service is set to be Running and Automatic.

If this still doesn't help, then refreshing Windows 8 usually will.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

I have the same issue.

1. Fresh load on WIN 8 Pro, Metro/Modern apps like News, Mail, Financial, Photos, etc worked for about a day or so, then they won't open. Checked screen resolutoin, UAC, and I am not using any AV outside of Win Defender and Win Firewall.

2.Reloaded, complete reinstall of Win 8 Pro, same results, apps worked about a day or so then the regular Metro/Modern apps won't open.

3. Called MS Support and they suggested a WIN 8 Refresh. Did that (it took quite a while) and no change, same apps won't open.

MS has a problem that seems to be affecting a lot of folks, just not everyone is seems. They make us start with the Metro start page, you would think they would have gotten at least that right for everyone. Anyway, I supposedly will get a call from a level 2 support person tonight, but I am more apt I think to get the solution in Eight Forums someday.

Im not going to bother with a refresh until there is more information. I can be patient. My gut tells me my system is fine and this is something outside.

do you have an ATI/AMD graphics card and installed the catalyst driver suite?

recap of the problem: metro apps having difficulty streaming or crashing back to the start screen. a lot of these problems were random. so I was having problems with Skype, Netflix, iHeartRadio, Xbox Music, TuneIn Radio, etc.

it turns out to be the AMD Catalyst 12.6 Legacy Driver for Windows 8!!! Something with the driver is causing the problem! I uninstalled the driver and the entire Catalyst suite and rebooted. The ATI/AMD driver that comes with Windows 8 replaced the 12.6 version and every application started working again!

I have an ATI HD4670 graphics card.

I won't take credit for discovering this. I found it from this link:
Windows 8 Apps (Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, TuneIn) will not - Microsoft Community

Well thats interesting.

In my case I have nvidia card, but an error like this steming from a graphics card driver issue, means some ironing out is necessary.

Well, that's not "interesting", it is not unlikely. Here in German Micrsoft Answers Forum we (the mods) are suggesting an uninstall of Nvidia software before Win 8 Upgrade. The reason - beside the simple driver, the installer package came with some additional components - some implemented as services. And we have had cases, where such services had an effect on modern UI or other features.

The best idea is: If malfunctions happens, try to launch msconfig, disable all non microsoft services and auto start elements, and try to reboot. If the malfunction is gone, some non MS services is influenced. Also some third party security tools has side effects to W8 features.

I've written a couple of articles within my blog about upgrade and metro app start problems - but it's useless to point to that - because all articles written in German.

Thank you. I will look deeper into possible Nvidia issue and check services.

Edit so far have stopped nvidia services with no effect.

Edit : I uninstalled all Nvidia and let windows pick the driver. No effect on my APP connecting problems.

I had a similar problem with the TuneIn radio app not working in Windows eight. Found this solution on this forum. Took your advise and uninstalled my AMD Catalyst Suite. That worked for me. TuneIn works perfectly now. Thanks.

Are any of you using Avast! as your AV protection??

Apparently, there is an issue with opening apps with Avast! installed, or so i've read.
