No Video with WMP windows media player

I did the upgrade from win7 to win8 x64. When I try to use wmp I get audio but no video.
I have tried reinstalling my codecs and different codecs like sharks, klite etc. I have reinstalled my graphic drivers. I have tried add/remove features, but no look. Its the same
with wmc. I can play videos with quicktime. I was going to try a refresh, but I have way to many programs to reinstall, and a win8 inplace upgrade doesn't offer to keep my apps & settings.
Any ideas how I can repair or reinstall wmp without wiping out my system and reinstalling all my programs?

Shark007 Did Not Resolve Black Video in Media Center and Media Player

Media Player and Media Center will not play the video, although the audio is fine. Video shows up as black. I can use VLC to play the video and audio, but I should be able to see it all in media center. Referring to the post above, I installed the Shark007 codecs, both 32-bit, then 64-bit, both installed as administrator, and I restarted the machine after each install. Even though the Shark007 web site says it does it all automatically, it did nothing at all for me.
Does Shark007 actually need some sort of post-install configuration. I admit to not being an expert in codecs, and I'm lost.

As I said, VLC works great. My problem is getting Windows Media Center to show video other than a black screen. Brummyfan directed me to Shark007. It's web site says install and it's all done automatically, but I installed and still have a black screen in Media Center. What's the follow-up thay Shark007 claims it doesn't require?

I'm sorry to hear that Shark's codecs are not working for you, BTW you don't need to adjust any configuration for it to work. My WMP and WMC both play videos without additional codecs, so I am unable to check Shark's codecs. Wait for someone to come up with a solution.

I installed Win 8 with the keep personal files option. It converted or changed my Windows Media/Adiio files .asf to .mov. The audio works fine with Windows Media Player but the video part is black. Any ideas?

This is old news but WMP can no longer play DVD "videos" in Windows 8 PERIOD!

I'm not sure how brummyfan got it to work but according to Microsoft the ability to play DVD's was removed from WMP. WMC works still but it's an add on now.

Maybe the codecs will work but Msoft says no way.

I have the same problem with video decoding. I can continue watching videos on vlc but it's impossible to use another video player. Even camera app fails because of this issue.

I see you have a Vaio netbook like mine.

The problem comes from new AMD graphic card drivers for Windows 8. Everything works fine, except video decoding. I realized because I unistalled Amd drivers and video played well.

In my case I was able to install my old Windows 7 drivers via "devices manager" and everything works fine, although performance in games is much worse. Now I've installed the last Windows 8 drivers because of their performance in games. I don't mind not to be able to play videos or use camera app, but I'd like it to be solved.

PD: I sent an email to AMD support asking them to fix this problem. Do the same in order to solve this problem in next driver releases.

Hi Chev65,
I have to correct my earlier statement regarding WMP 12, when I was able to play downloaded video clips, I wrongly assumed the DVD disc would also play.
WMP 12 plays, downloaded video contents, VCD but not DVD discs.
WMC plays DVD discs.
Sorry for the misleading statement.

In my case both WMP & WMC didn't play any videos , and in WMC even no audio and video , it just stuck in a black screen :(

If memory serves be right, Microsoft did not include the codecs for video. The audio codec aren't up to par either. This was done to save money and also led to the decision to initially remove Windows Media Center.

I believe I overcame these shortcomings by inherting the video codecs used in the cyberware DVD software, and inherited the audio codecs by replacing the motherboard's built-in audio with a soundblaster PCIe card.

You can also find some shareware video codecs from shark007.
