    Print from Metro

After bringing up I.E. from a Metro tile, and loading an article that is to be printed I hit <WIN-K> to display Devices. But none is shown. Instead, this message: "nothing can be sent from the Desktop."

Tutorials on printing from Metro apps state that a list of devices should appear. For example, CNET says...

"In Windows 8, open the Metro app from which you wish to print. For this example, we'll use Internet Explorer. Open the Metro version of Internet Explorer by clicking on its Start screen tile.

Browse to any Web site that has a page you wish to print, such as CNET's site. Type cnet.com in the address field at the bottom of the browser screen. Click on a story that you wish to print.

Hover your mouse in the lower right hot corner to trigger the Charms bar. Move your mouse up the bar and click on the Devices charm. Your printer and other devices should appear in a list. Click on the name of the printer that you wish to use"

I.E. certainly supports printing. I.E. from either the Desktop or a Metro tile brings up exactly the same I.E. app. Launched from Metro, I.E.'s location bar is not at the bottom of the screen, but at the top, just as it is when invoked from the Desktop. Perhaps that is why no devices are shown when <ctrl-k> brings up the Devices charm - because this I.E. IS the familiar desktop version.

I do recall seeing an I.E. window that had the location bar at the bottom - earlier. Perhaps that Metro I.E. been abandoned in the RTM version of Windows 8??

I am hip to numerous other routes to printing (some far simpler).

Win+K does bring up the devices menu, but it doesn't bring it up in the context of the currently-running app for some reason. However, if you press Win+C and click on Devices (rather than entering it directly from the Win+K shortcut), you'll see printers. I don't know why this is.

Whether one goes the <WIN-K>, <WIN-C> or the click from the right-bottom of the screen route, it's the same here.
It is apparent that clicking on the Metro I.E. tile is bringing up the "desktop" version of I.E. Thus the message is shown, instead of devices. Is there a Metro I.E. in RTM and if so how is it invoked?

The modern browser (or metro browser if you will) is what starts when you click the IE icon on the start screen. Desktop IE only starts if you run IE from the taskbar shortcut on the desktop, or open a site in desktop mode from the modern/metro browser.

That's the theory, but not the reality here. When the I.E. tile is clicked from the START menu the desktop version appears with its location bar at the top. Prior to RTM, I do recall occasionally seeing the I.E. Metro browser whose location bar is at the bottom.

What do you see when you click the I.E. tile? If it's the "modern" browser, then why do I not see the same here?

If the default browser has been changed, then this is what happens. You might want to make sure that you go into Default Programs in the control panel and set IE as the default if you want modern IE, and not just the desktop browser.

You are correct sir. The "modern" browser than appears, and Devices can be summoned from the charms bar. I note, however, that I.E.'s location bar remains at the top. Perhaps that was changed during the ramp-up process. Thanks for the enlightenment.
