Does windows 8 media centre play blurays?

    Hi all,
Somewhat stupidly rushed out and bought 8 home edition for my media pc without researching it, and found it doesn't have home media centre and need win 8 pro to install it. Playing DVDs is not a problem as I can just use VLC, but VLC won't play many blurays. Google isn't clear on whether bluray playback is included with WMC in 8, even on MS's website.
Anyone with WMC installed can tell me the answer?
To upgrade to win 8 pro is $79 so might just be worth it if bluray player works and is decent, but if it isn't then will just buy a standalone software player.

Very annoyed with myself for not doing proper research as would only have been an extra 30 bucks to get win 8 pro version in the first place, and then i'd have group policy editor included too, the lack of which is proving another annoyance. Last time I don't go pro!

    Thanks
    Jon

no it doesn't support blurays, if anyone else is interested. makes it much less worthwhile buying pro just to get wmc.

you won't have to go out and buy windows 8 pro. they're releasing an upgrade pack so that people can go from regular windows 8 to windows 8 pro. and when you go to windows 8 pro, you get access to WMC.

For bluray you've always had to purchase 3rd party software. You have to pay licensing for bluray codecs.

Speaking of Bluray has anyone here able to use WinDVD 11 Pro? Mine installed fine but launching it and then trying to play a disc it just hangs and doesn't do anything. I've installed the latest patch from Corel. I also read some thread saying they'll have an update for Win8, but the preview has been around a long time, they couldn't fix this before the Win8 launch?

But that pack will set you back $70 and it upgrades you from Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro w/Media Center.

usually companies do not make driver or software updates until the release version is out. the reasoning is that the operating system is still changing so it's a moving target for the software guys. I had to go through the same pains when Windows 7 came out which broke some of the things I was using. I remember using the preview version of Windows 7 and writing letters to the companies about when Windows 7 support would be updated and they all gave me the same thing. They don't write drivers for beta software.

Yeah I had powerdvd in the past I got fed up with it's performance issues. Windvd Pro 11 seemed to work better for me, but on win8 it's not working at all.
