Copy programs from 'windows.old' to windows 8

    Hello,

I just installed Windows 8 (from Windows Vista).
It runs perfectly, but all my programs from Vista (Program Files) are all in the windows.old folder.

Is there a way to copy / restore them to windows 8?
The Microsoft site only shows how to put personal settings back, but not all the programs.

    Thanks in advance

Hello Beunhass, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Unfortunately, unless they are standalone .exe programs, your programs will need to be reinstalled in Windows 8.

I'm a little confused, if I upgrade to 8 from windows 7, will my programs still be installed and ready to use? Or will I have to re install them...

    Hello opiop,

If upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, then yes any are incompatible with Windows 8. You will have a file on your desktop in Windows 8 after the upgrade letting you know of any programs that didn't make the cut. Most will be fine though.

If upgrading from Vista to Windows 8, then installed programs will not be carried over into Windows 8.

The blue Note box at the top of the tutorial below has a table with more details to also better help.

    Hope this helps,

    Another question:

trying to solve the problem I've cut/pasted programs from windows.old program files to the Windows 8 program files folder(I'm not so good with computers so I thought it would help hehe). Is there any way to see which files I've copied and which files were already in Program Files in Windows 8, so I can delete the copied files?

    Beunhass,

About the only way is to open two File Explorer (new name for Windows Explorer) windows with one at the C:\Windows.old location and the other in the C:\Program Files location to compare them.

Do note, that copying programs over like that will usually not work since programs are not just installed to the C:\Program Files folder. They usually must be reinstalled.

    Hi Brink,

after reading your answer the files were already cut/pasted to program files.
Because I cut/pasted the files, they are no longer in the windows.old folder, so I can't compare which files were originally in the windows.old folder.

Or is there any option to go back just after the installation of Windows 8 (to the point when I just installed it from Vista)?
