    Plagiarism

In the rules (#35) it states, bluntly, " No plagiarism"
Definition: "To use the words or ideas of another person as if they were your own words or ideas. "

This must, indeed, be an impossible thing to censor in a Windows help forum. Pretty much all help has been offered, at some time or other, in different forms. It becomes an easy way out to copy and paste from another's work, without editing.
Even today help was offered on a network solution which contravened the rule. I offered the same solution several years ago, and I was no the first. It has been repeated countless times on the web, over those years and, as in the instance mentioned, an identical copy of the original, without reference to the original author, who could probably not be traced in ant case. It is a general solution, with a straightforward answer, but no attempt was made to alter it or refer to a previous internet entry.

This happens on a daily basis and one can only take it that leniency must be applied by the moderators and administrators, when seeing such posts.
I was recently censored, for a minor digression, and, ashamedly, read the rules for the first time. Whilst I found I was definitely "guilty" of some trivia, I was surprised to read, and see, how many of the rules were in fact being broken on a regular basis.
Worth reading if members have not already done so.

    Hello David,

This is a gray line issue that is evaluated on a case by case basis.

It's usually only an issue when a straight copy of original (proprietary) content (ex: tutorial, news article, etc...) has been copied and presented as your work instead. Content such as this must only have a small portion to get the idea of what it's about with a link to the source.

This doesn't really apply to general generic solutions unless it's from a source like above.

We have to be strict about this since it can be a copyright violation that could cause us to get a DMCA notice to remove the content.

If you ever in doubt, please just report it with a link to the source, or ask me here or via a PM/VM.

If someone does something against the rules, if it is a minor transgression, I think getting a personal message from the powers that be just saying not to do it again, would be nice.

I think most people here would appreciate that approach.

    Just my opinion.

I think most people here are quite good natured & reasonable.

We usually just issue a "staff note" for minor transgressions such as this. It's nothing more than a friendly reminder or warning about the forum rules. It's basically no different than getting a PM, but just documented. This way if the action continues, we have a record of past history to reference.

A "staff note" is not the same thing as an "infraction", and does not penalize your rep points like an infraction does.

I agree. Most cases are just honest mistakes and is why a staff note is perfect for this.

Well, it's just another thread I opened to see what others had to say.
Certainly, as I said, it can be a good thing to remind members that there are actually some rules to follow.

The first 2, for example #3, Rudeness: insults: attacks:, often occur without moderation, as do (rule#2), useless posts: (Like this one - lol) , useless one-liners etc.

Nar, this post is not useless since you had a legitimate question.

We do try to spot all the rude etc... posts and moderate as needed, but we do miss a few until we spot them since there are so many to go through. It does help to get them moderated faster if any found by members are reported though.
