Solved Windows Defender icon now shows in notification tray

I know for a fact that Windows Defender did not have an icon in the notification tray/taskbar in Windows 8/8.1. I'm talking about the bottom right and if you have/had Win 7 using MSE you would have the icon (green house with checkmark and flag) if enabled. When Windows Defender did not have...

I want to uninstall them as suggested but have run in to an issue...

    Chrome is pretty meh also

Got tired of IE11 crashing on Windows 8.1. So I started using Google Chrome. Already tired of seeing Shockwave crashes and other assorted nonsense. Everyone criticizes Microsoft but it seems Google can't do much better. Maybe Edge will be the salvation.

From 8 to 8.1 with only one update?

I thought I read that you can go from 8 to 8.1 much easier than installing all the 8 updates and then getting the 8.1 update from the store. But of course I can't find it now. Is there one specific update that you can do in 8 that will allow the update to 8.1 to be visible or was I dreaming...

    IE11 and pdf files

Having some issues with pdf files. I already posted one question but this is more related to IE11 I think. Using IE11 in desktop or Modern I get a prompt to open or save a pdf. Isn't there a way to automatically open it? I do use the default Reader app. On my Win 7 computer using IE9 the...

Pdfs open in half window using Reader app

Learning curve has really been difficult. When I open a .pdf it uses the Reader app. I have no problem with that except when I am on a website it opens the pdf in a new half window. Meaning the original site and the .pdf each are in their own side by side window. Yes I can drag it to full...

How to correctly uninstall a preintalled antivirus program

Background: Laptop with Windows 8 preinstalled. Removed preinstalled McAfee trial version (never officially activated it but it works out of the box) using MCPR.exe. Updated to Win 8.1 and used Windows Defender with no issues. At some point I attempted a System Restore and got error...

    On screen notifications, general question

In Windows 8.1 do the on screen notifications only show on the Start screen? I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning. Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure...

Aerial view in Maps app are old

The Maps app that is on the start screen shows an aerial view of my neighborhood that is at least three years old. It says copyright 2014 but it is obvious the image is very old. This is a new computer updated to Win 8.1. Does the app need updating? Pretty disappointing.
