    Windows 8 For Power Users?

Doubts asked for feedback, specifically how it worked with certain applications and within a software developer's context. I shared my experiences thus far, as have others. I have seen more than my share of complaints regarding the UI's colors or the centered text in title bars but nothing...

    Windows 8 For Power Users?

We can always count on college students getting their new laptops and PCs each year. Unfortunately many will already have theirs by the consumer release of the OS in mid October.

    What's your favorite metro app?

100% agree with you - how better to show off your new OS on a nice large TV than by searching for delicious looking cocktails via Windows Search?! Very clean app.

    Windows 8 For Power Users?

I'll add that after running it for just over 2 weeks, I don't regret the upgrade. Actually I love it - I configured the start screen to use a larger font and tile size, and it looks great on a TV across the room. Much better than a desktop view for media center PC. But it's not my work PC so...

    Windows 8 For Power Users?

I upgraded to 8 - the upgrade allowed me to keep all of my installed apps except for DaemonTools (note below) and some legacy bluetooth thing I had forgotten about (it asked me to uninstall both of these prior to the upgrade). I would advise you to uninstall your antivirus unless you wait for...

    Solved Search screen broken?

So... I got home to check things out further and it's working now. No reboot (that I'm aware of, comp was running all day but I remoted in so I couldn't tell if it was locked or logged out previously). I also noticed that the news app is showing updates now whereas previously it only said...

Where has the Media folder selection gone?

I was just about to ask that question - because I had heard it wasn't free. $12.95 isn't exactly an arm and a leg, either, though. I wish I could combine Winamp with WMC. I didn't use WMC much - stuck with WMP in Win 7. But the problem was WMP's performance came to a crawl with 40,000+ songs...

    Solved Search screen broken?

Good question - are settings considered a flyout? If so then it's just search, settings pops up fine. Sadly, this wouldn't be an issue had AVG not removed part of IE the first time, which is what caused me to do a refresh. I'll give the reset a shot (I would assume that would have to fix it)...

    Solved Search screen broken?

Shawn, thanks for the link. Unfortunately I can bring up the search screen but it's broken. These aren't screen grabs from my PC but are photoshopped and close enough. You can see that the search pane is literally missing - this is the case in any app that supports search as well. Interestingly...

    RTM is ugly as heck

+1 on the idea FSeal I'd like to get a tablet installed in my kitchen and/or bed room for things like that

Where has the Media folder selection gone?

I want to correct/supplement my above statement about indexing network drives - at least in Windows 7, if you mark a network drive's folder as "available offline" then you can add it to the search index. Going to try it this evening myself. Regarding JRMC mentioned by tcman50, if they make a...

    RTM is ugly as heck

I do like the Metro style - just not the desktop window chrome. I use my TV as my primary display with an occasional visit via Remote Desktop. When in the context of a home theater PC the new Start screen and Metro apps are great (IMHO of course) due to the lack of visual noise. Personally I'd...

    Solved Search screen broken?

Sure - I'm at the office right now but I'd be glad to this evening. It also seems that search functionality within applications does not work. Clicking search in most if not all applications results in nothing :(

    RTM is ugly as heck

I just want to point out that centered text in title bars hasn't been used by MS since Windows 3.1.

Where has the Media folder selection gone?

Hi Jonny, In Windows 8 the music software automatically looks at your Music library defined in Windows Explorer. I haven't found a way to change it to look at a folder instead yet. To add locations to the library: Open up Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E, or bring up your desktop and find a...

    Solved Search screen broken?

Hi all, new to the forum and looking forward to becoming a contributor myself. I need to survive the first few days of Win8 myself though! I just performed a refresh of my MSDN RTM copy of Windows 8 and my search screen (from the start screen) is dumbed-down now - i.e.: when I go to the search...
