    Microsoft as a Subscription?

You are right Coke. I hasn't checked the price for the business plan in a while. In NZ dollars now per year for 1 seat with TAX is $88.32. The total until 2020 would now only be $1773.24. Still a thousand dollars more than the stand alone price. Still planning to stick to 2010. But only...

    Microsoft as a Subscription?

When Office 2013 first came out I worked out this spreadsheet, comparing the upgrade costs to 2013. I currently have Office 2010 Pro X 1 and H&S x 3. I only use Excel and Word and need at least one commercial license because I am self employed and use it for business. I have 3 computers. My...

Five reasons I'd rather run Windows 8 than Linux

Yes both of the hard drives are internal. The SSD is a Samsung 840 Evo 1 TB attached to a SATA3 port. The Western Digital is attached to SATA2. The virtual box settings are not quite even though. All have 4 GB of RAM, but Mint uses only 2 processors and 128 MB of video RAM. Win 8.11 has 4...

Here is some boot times for virtual box machines. I moved them last week from a Western Digital Black to a SSD. WD 2TB Black SSD Start win 8.11 38.81 21.07 Mint 16 26.52 13.31 Mint Debian 42.92...

    Microsoft as a Subscription?

Don't forget that prior to the subscription model from Microsoft you could get a 3 user copy of Home and Student 2010 for about the same or less money than it now costs for the single user/device version of 2013. That increase in price for the purchased version has made the subscription appear...

    New Zealand bans software patents

You are right that we are not a lap dog, we are far to small. I would put us more as a handbag dog. Especially after passing the GCSB Bill.

Mark your calendars for Windows 8.1!

You do not have to reinstall, but you do have to reinstall your apps. Still the same story as when the preview came out. This is repeated in the comments section of the linked article

Can I change hardware and improve Win8 Font Rendering?

On my system the fonts on 7 and 8 look as good or better than Linux. Have you got ClearType turned on and are you using scaling on your video driver?

Can I change hardware and improve Win8 Font Rendering?

It is not a DPI issue. The blurry font is a fault in Windows 8 and a fix is supposed to be coming in 8.1. The people suffering it appear to be fairly random and I have not heard of a successful fix. A hardware change may fix it and if you have spare hardware it could be worth a try. But I...

VLC now being targeted by Movie Chiefs

It is not the same player. Just looks like Media Player 6.4 in Windows 2000. It was started when Microsoft brought out XP and a lot of people did not like the new media player that came built in.

Can't use my MS Office without Internet ???

What version of office 365 do you have. Office 365 can be used as Office on Demand where it is streamed to your PC as opposed to being installed. Maybe that is the version that you are using.

Windows 8.1 first look: Finally, Windows the way you want

If you pick the wrong distro then you can find them a bit elitist. If you choose something like Mint or Ubuntu the forums are a lot better. But Linux is my fall back plan. I have several distros running under Virtualbox and play with them. It is a bit of a learning curve but google does...

Windows 8.1 first look: Finally, Windows the way you want

I know this is Microsoft's dream, but we are not going to give up without a fight. My prediction is their dream will more then likely turn into a nightmare. Not all of us are Quislings.

Windows 8.1 'Blue' preview: It beats Windows 8

Nothing at all with a healthy dose of Paranoia. With both Microsoft and Google I stay logged out as much as possible. After all you are the "product" on their free services. I cannot see any reason to make life even easier for them or the NSA

Windows 8.1 'Blue' preview: It beats Windows 8

You can actually sign in locally when you install from an ISO, they just hid it. If you enter an invalid Microsoft account ID when you are prompted, it will return an error and the installer will give you the option of signing in locally or retrying. I found this by mistake because I stuffed...

Windows 8.1’s Success Critical for Microsoft’s “Morale”

This is a really a trolling article from Softpedia because Gartner did not actually say what they are quoting. They have made what was a reasonably sensible statement from Gartner sound like an April Fools joke by adding a couple of words like all instead of most. And then later "advises...
