I don't think it's a common problem, though I don't know why. Those settings are the same here except that I have the top two animations off as well as mouse pointer shadows.

Just wanted to bring this subject up again in case someone has stumbled on exactly why it happens. I can confirm that it's also an issue in Windows 10, which is no surprise.

I now have the same issue, and I suspect it started after August Windows Updates, but I reboot so infrequently I'm not sure. Did you ever find an answer to the issue? In my case, the monitor sleeps for about 90 seconds, and then presto, just like you, you see the BIOS logo and Windows boots...

I was going to start my own thread about this, so I'm glad to have found this one. I've had this problem for years through multiple installs. Whether it started with 8.0 I'm not sure (I'm leaning towards it being in Win7 too, but it's been a long time), but the latest 8.1 doesn't resolve it...

Does anyone know of a hack for this? It's not new to Win8 and is by design, according to the definition of the error # left in the applog (see below). This seems like the sort of thing that there would be a workaround for, but I haven't found it yet if so. It's a definite annoyance.

But weren't you going to check in the applet to see whether it's pointing to the external monitor or the laptop's? In the applet, that's in several areas under the "Display" subsection (advanced mode). Win8 also has its own UI for this. Are they all pointing away from the external monitor...

Do you see "Intel Graphics and Media" when looking in Control Panel (small icons view)? You should also be able to bring it up with Ctrl-Alt-F12. If you don't have it, then try reinstalling the driver, since it's installed by default. System clean? You mentioned W7--that was a typo, right?

@ironical, that is an interesting one and certainly not the usual problem around here, which is typically getting the driver installed/working in the first place. When you were checking the display settings, were you looking both in W8's settings and Intel's advanced mode applet? If both areas...

ironical, you should be able to use the official W8 beta driver that Intel put out a couple weeks ago (see a handful of posts above). Is that what you tried? The workaround on the first page is no longer needed. If you have the Dell-supplied driver installed now, you may have to uninstall it first.
