Can't connect to remote computer (desktop)

just downloaded teamviewer for a revisit and it has come a long way since i last used it, it's great, more than fast and responsive enough for my needs (altho i haven't tried it again using an internet connection, which was problematic the last time i tried to use it many years ago)... anyway, i...

Can't connect to remote computer (desktop)

well it looks like the following post clearly explains why i can't connect to my 8.1 machine from my pro machine, yet why i can do the opposite... amazing how many google returned "solutions" never mentioned this, that only a 8.1 pro machine can act as a remote host when using remote desktop...

Power Options - Add or Remove "Dim display after"

found a free, simple program - shadenow... so far it seems to be a winner and does just what i need: dims the screen x % after x amount of time, both defined by the user, and returns to full brightness, or wakes up, the moment you touch the screen... Shadenow - Download

Power Options - Add or Remove "Dim display after"

thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't look to be what i'm after, which is something that will dim the screen x% when the system is idle, and return to full brightness once the screen is touched again, without ever turning off the screen... gonna do some more google searching, there has to be...

Power Options - Add or Remove "Dim display after"

thanks for the prompt reply but i'm a bit confused, i thought the reg "fix" was for those who didn't have the "dim display after" option originally, i.e. that it would give them it, assuming a battery driven pc... if that's not the case, what is this "fix" for? thanks again...

Power Options - Add or Remove "Dim display after"

ran the reg file on my windows 8.1 based tablet and it successfully added "dim display after" to the display power options. however after setting the "dim display after" time, 5 minutes in my case, nothing happens, the screen does not dim. is this feature dependent on setting the "turn off...

Replacement MOBO, CPU Upgrade, W8 Reinstall Required?

well i think that's common practice whenever new hardware is installed, even when doing a fresh install.

Replacement MOBO, CPU Upgrade, W8 Reinstall Required?

yep, that's what i've concluded after doing some more research, including talking to a couple of hp field tech guys who told me that they've done this very thing (mobo replacement, cpu upgrade) many, many times and no w8 reinstall was required, just reactivation. i was also told that a cpu...

Replacement MOBO, CPU Upgrade, W8 Reinstall Required?

so it appears that my mobo is on it's way out (according to the manufacturer, based on the symptoms i reported) and it will need to be replaced, the manufacturer will be shipping out a replacement this week, same board. prior to my mobo problems i had planned to upgrade my processor and memory...

Solved SFC /Scannow - Corrupted Files

the thing is, all was working perfectly fine before as well, the handful of corrupted files /scannow encountered was just bugging me more than anything else, it wasn't impacting my system's performance. nonetheless i'm glad /scannow is reporting a clean slate, thanks to your help. re the...

Solved SFC /Scannow - Corrupted Files

guess what? there's no dism.log file residing in my c:\windows\logs\dism\ folder, i'ts empty - also, a system search diesn't turn up the file either. fwiw i have show all system files and folders enabled. maybe this is the reason why /restorehealth reports "the component store corruption was...

Solved SFC /Scannow - Corrupted Files

per your post i simply 7-zipped the install.wim file (from the backup copy of my win8 dvd on my storage drive) and then copied/pasted the files in question. baraboom, back in business - scf now reports: windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations. interestingly, dism...

Odd Windows Media Center DVD Behavior?

something else i just noticed - if i'm playing a dvd in wmc on the 1920x1080 display and i full screen it, my mouse is trapped in the 1920x1080 display, i can no longer move it back and forth to each display. so if i want to use both displays, i can't fullscreen dvd playback. again, what the heck?

Odd Windows Media Center DVD Behavior?

so i use dual displays, one is 1920x1080, the other 2560x1440 (which is my primary display), and they are configured as extended. for whatever reason dvds won't play in wmc if i open/launch wmc in my 2560x1440 display, but they play perfectly well if i open/launch wmc i my 1920x1080...

Solved SFC /Scannow - Corrupted Files

roughly the same going on here - if i run dism /checkhealth or /scanhealth i get "no component store corruption detected. the operation completed successfully". yet if i run /restorehealth i get "the operation completed successfully. the component store corruption was repaired". lovely. in any...
