It's happening right now. I've attached three screenshots from resmon. The first is everything in System sorted by Read, the second is sorted by write and the third by response time. I hope this helps. I'll give that a go and see how it goes for a few days. Thank you!

It's calmed down again now, I'll check next time it's slowing down.

High writes are coming from the page file and the NTFS volume log. High reads are coming from C:\Users\*myname*\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles.xml and the Page file and Also the "NTFS Free Space Map"

Do you man HDD usage? If not, CPU usage isn't the problem here.

Superfetch is running and startup is automatic. I ran a third party disk "fixer" yesterday on every drive in my PC and they all came up clean. The utility I used is called HDD Regenerator. chkdsk /r implies /f and /f fixes errors on the disk, so if I'm correct I do not need to run chkdsk..?

Yes, System.

The process "System" is showing in task manager to be using 100% of the HDD (100% activity, not storage) and running from anything between 5MB/s to 60MB/s. This is causing real problems for me as often programs will just stop responding because System is hogging the disk and they can't load...

Just found out Seagate acquired Maxtor a number of years ago, and can't find a Maxtor website. Google searches of Maxtor direct me straight to Seagate. Should I use Seagate Tools?
