I don't have fast startup enabled. I have just downloaded and (re)installed all chipset and related updates. Will see if that makes any difference.

I'm still using office 2007. I haven't installed anything at all other than upgrading to win 8. I'll keep my eyes out for solutions, but as you say, this is an old (albeit expensive and efficient) printer. Perhaps it is time to bite the bullet and upgrade. Thanks again, Allanah
