I used to be the Administrator of my Windiws 8.1 Laptop. While trying to bypass Startup password I messed up and now the Administrator is HomeGroupUser$ and I am reduced to a mere Guest. As a Guest I can't revert to becoming the Administrator again. Please help me to regain my earlier status as...

    Classic Shell for Windows 8

At How to Disable Aero Glass Transparency in Windows 8 Taskbar? - AskVG it is clained that the latest edition of Classic Shell has an option to make the Taskbar opaque in Windows 8.1. I use Classic Shell and always keep it updated. However the option checked in the image above is missing...

Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image

Dear Shawn, I suppose that a custom recovery image if on a separate drive, can also be used if the OS crashes and has to be re-installed. Regards, Amarnath

Macrium Reflect v5.1 and Windows 8

I have UEFI BIOS. I have just backed up my system with the free Macrium Reflect 5.2.6515 and also created a Rescue Disk. On booting with the Rescue Disk in Safe Boot the the Rescue Disk CD is skipped and the Laptop boots to the OS. My question is that if for some reason the C Drive is unable to...

    Classic Shell for Windows 8

To Ivo my question is that whether those who are not having any problem extract the ClassicExplorer64.dll from the zip file and place it in the Classic Shell folder or not?

Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

OK, I now understand. All the programs installed are in the two Program Files Folders. I had thought that the changes made in the configurations are mostly recorded in the Registry files which are in Windows, but maybe I am wrong and they are recorded elsewhere like the Program Data or the...

Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

I am not clear what you mean by program installed or saved to another location. Perhaps by program you mean Recimg Manager. I downloaded Recimg Manager Setup.exe after I had created the .wim Image, thanks to all the help that I got from Adam and yourself, and tested that it was restoring OK. A...

Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

Hi Shawn, In trying to find an answer to why Recimg does not restore the configurations of the installed programs. I found a free program Recimg Manager at Download RecImg Manager - MajorGeeks. I haven't checked if it is included in the list of free programs or not but if it isn't then it...

Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

I consulted an Expert on Registry about the problem of configuration tweaks not being restored when the backed up Registry was restored. He replied as follows. "The registry is contained in 4 files. These are SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, SAM & SECURITY. You said that SYSTEM is backed up. If SOFTWARE is...

Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

Thanks Adam. If an exact copy of the Registry is included in the .wim Image then why do the configuration tweaks not restored with the Image. Most of then are just Registry tweaks? I do not have 7-zip which I am aware in free, because I have been using WinRar for ages. WinRar doesn't recognize a...

Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

Hi Adam, You had said that the Pagefile and Hyberfil files are backed, but it appears that the Registry Files are not backed. Had that been done then the configurations carried out on the various Programs would not have disappeared when restoring the .win Image. Supposing I back up the...

Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

Did a test run for the heck of it. Everything went OK and in about 30 minutes yesterday's image got restored. However all the programs came back with default configurations and had to be reconfigured again. Bit of a hassle, but 500% better than starting afresh with the Factory Image. Thanks...

Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

Thanks a lot. All doubts are resolved. But a new question arises now. When the built in Custom Recovery Image (.wim) is so good then why should anyone use some third-party imaging program at all?
