if taskbar is visible, then only 2 clicks to get to your recent doc.
Right click taskbar icon (excel), scroll down list of recent docs, left click to open. (2 clicks)
If NOT active/visible, add WIN+T (one more action, so 3 "clicks" to get there.

the pin to taskbar option is highly attractive too ...
Pin Excel or Word or adobe etc to taskbar, right click that pinned icon, and your recent (in context) docs are all there ...
If taskbar visible, 2 clicks, done.
If not, WIN+T, then go.

Also, the peculiar numbered folders that keep appearing eg. 00000081, prevent those from appearing somehow?

Comparatively, seems to be the same amount of steps once configured (unless you are pushing for the "but I don't customise" logic)
also noted that my native USB2 ports copy faster than Windows 7 used to.
Used to get 22MB/s, now getting 27MB/s.

Try it without the limit access option.
If it still fails I suspect your source media to be corrupt, eg DVD scratched or bum ISO image etc ...
Just use the builtin Shutdown / restart options.

Windows 8 has (to my knowledge) incorporated one of the best little tools ever into the start screen, i.e Microsoft Officelabs Speed Launch. If you EVER used speed launch, you would know...

Install OBLYtile, a win8 start screen customiser.
Once installed, open tile manager (last button top right)
Goto quick list, 3rd button, click programs, click create tile (bott left)
Now hit START, start typing in programs, and voila.
