I'm also looking for a solution to this. Posting so as to subscribe to the thread. Current suggestions are to enable and use the AeroLite theme - this will disable the Taskbar Transparency, however the theme isn't quite as slick as the default Win8 one.

I use Default Programs Editor to edit file associations. It also has a 'Create backup or restore' feature which is perfect for when you're experimenting with file types :)

Heh yea. It put the card reader (+USB hub) into a dismount state. I had to reconnect it before it would work again. How odd. I wonder if there's a way to tell/trick Win8 into thinking a device is internal and cannot be unmounted/removed..? Gonna have a look at the USB settings in the registry...
