Changing boot sequence - EASY question

Yeah, after posting that a neighbor suggested KillDisk. Worked fine. I went with DBan because it's overwhelmingly considered the best. But, after several days of failures, I didn't want to spend several more days. Thanks for the help anyway.

Changing boot sequence - EASY question

Make that 10-12 YEARS. But, I have an update. I DLd/burned DBAN on 3 different PCs (OK, 2 PCs, 1 laptop), verifying each time. Set all 3 to boot first from DVD. None of them boot from DVD (one PC is W10). 1 PC and the laptop give an error, something similar to 'disc is not bootable.' Have...

Changing boot sequence - EASY question

Thanks for the reply. Went to user guide for the M79. If I'm reading right, the instructions are . . . Selecting or changing the startup device sequence To view or permanently change the configured startup device sequence, do the following: 1. Start the Setup Utility program. See “Starting...

Changing boot sequence - EASY question

You may well be right. Put a blank DVD in the drive. Right-click the DBAN iso file, and select Burn to Disk. After a few seconds, the DVD pops out. That's burned, right?

Changing boot sequence - EASY question

Thanks. That's the article I went by to burn the disc. Went over it again and, I THINK, I did it right. Just curious, is there a disc I can put in my drive that would run or produce an error on boot up? If so, I'll boot up with that and see if the problem is the DBAN CD or a W8 setting.

First, I have a Lenovo PC, Samsung monitor, Logitec keyboard, WB USB HD. I have no idea what the HP is. Found and disabled Secure Boot. Still boots straight to W8. I see no Novo button.

Changing boot sequence - EASY question

Sorry for the slow reply. I have no idea what secure boot and/or fast boot are. How do I find out? I suspect the NOVO button is on the keyboard? Nope. This may not be a W8 question, but is there a way to tell if the DBAN disk actually burned?

Changing boot sequence - EASY question

Let me provide some more data. I've created a boot CD containing DBAN. I say "I think," because I selected the files, right-clicked, and chose 'Burn to Disk.' I received no indication of success or failure, but the files are on the disk. How can I confirm the files have been burned properly...

    Accessing W8 Firewall

Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe I'm reading the tutorial wrong, but I used Control Panel>Windows Firewall>Turn On/Off to get the screenshots I posted. If there's another way in the tutorial, I missed it.

Changing boot sequence - EASY question

W8, ver 6.3 Trying to set my PC so it boots from CD. To me, it LOOKS like it should boot. I've attached a screenshot showing, I think, boot from CD/DVD first. It doesn't - boots straight to W8. Should it boot from CD first? If not, what did I do wrong?

    Java memory use

How this is the proper forum. Running W8.1. My system has been slow for a few months. A little slow on bootup, VERY slow after 2-3 days. For example, after 2-3 days, it takes 2-3 minutes for Word to open. 4 minutes for an email to fully open. Pushing the Windows button can take 3-5...

Slow windows - and I've tried about everything

Windows 8.1 ver 6.2 I've read proposed solutions here and on the web. No luck. Here is what I know. After reboot, W8 runs pretty well. As the days go on, it gets exceedingly slow. (NOTE: all time given were actually timed) Browser (Firefox, IE, Chrome) can take 5-6 minutes to complete an...

    Accumulating problems on W8

I'm guessing this is a "performance" problem, but, before I start, FWIW, uninstalled Avast 2-3 weeks ago, Initially, my problem became slow refresh on Windows Internet Explorer, Firefox, and EM Client. Browser pages would take 3-5 minutes to re-display. EM Client would take 1-2 minutes to...

    Apps losing focus

First, two apologies. 1) I couldn't find a forum that looked relevant to my problem so this may be mis-posted. 2) I don't know the Windows lingo, so this may be more difficult than it should be. The last 3-4 days, my apps are losing focus. May not be the right word - let me explain. If I'm...

    W8 reinstall

Thanks for the link. Before I start, I want to make sure we're all talking about the same thing. Right now, I'm stuck on the "Region and Language" screen. Have to hit SHIFT/F10 to access the Command prompt. To me, that isn't the START screen. BTW, I'm able to boot from the PC to get to...
