Windows 8.1 keeps losing manual DNS settings: Workaround?

It's usually very easy to enter alternative DNS sources in your router rather than in the OS. But, of course, there are reasons to do it in the OS; for example, if you don't want other devices on your wireless network to use the alternate DNSs.

    Microsoft Money 2001

By default, my version of Money saved the data in a folder named "My Money" under the "Documents" (or "My Documents") folder. I think I had the 2004 version, however. Don't know if earlier versions did the same. In any case, I'd search your old computer disks for a "My Money" folder. Another...

    Lines showing up across screen

Well, it could always be some other problem--a failing power supply is another possibility--but you could replace the video card easily for about $50-60. Check newegg.com or amazon. A new, low-end PC might be around $400.

There might be several potential causes, but the odds are that your video card is failing.

Is Windows 8.1 that awful for private (local) email?

You don't *need* to have a Microsoft mail account to use Win 8.1, but you definitely should use one to sign into your PC when you go through setup. In Win 8.1 everything in the OS, apps, and Microsoft ecosystem is synced around your Microsoft account login. Using a "local" account instead, which...

    Num Lock on Startup Anomaly

I've been fighting this issue for some time also. Finally found a solution for my PC. This link covers disabling Fast Start and the Registry change to "2." Fix: Num Lock is not active on startup or reboot in Windows 7 | 8 But here's what I had to do before it worked: - Turn off Fast Start...

Can I use the same password & computer name for new laptop

I use the same Microsoft account password on my 3 computers. Has the advantage of syncing things like desktop, favorites, etc. if you want to do so. I would not use the same computer name. If you use Homegroup or other networking, it would make it harder to tell one from another.

    Is Windows Defender okay?

Most of the advice I've seen over the years recommend NOT running two anti-virus programs at the same time. E.g., https://blog.kaspersky.com/multiple-antivirus-programs-bad-idea/. Some people run a weekly (or monthly?) scan with a second program, which seems like a better idea if you're really...

    Is Windows Defender okay?

It's fine and all you need if you're just reasonably careful on how you use the Internet. I also like that it is light-weight and updates continuously with no effort on my part.

Solved Is it hard to build a computer?

AMD or Intel can both be overclocked or not; it's a function of the model. You can save money going with AMD, but currently the Intel chips win on performance (in general). Go with 64-bit. Since you're not overclocking, you might save going with an H87 motherboard. However, the new...

Solved Is it hard to build a computer?

Newegg is a great site; also compare prices at Amazon, Tiger Direct. You might want to compare prices for a 1150 Intel Z87 system--not too much more for the newer Haswell system components than for Ivy Bridge. Also, if you're not going to overclock, you'll save significantly going with the...

Solved Is it hard to build a computer?

I think the biggest issue for a novice builder is the poor quality control of component manufacturers. I've built 5 systems over the past four years, and had some frustrating times dealing with: 1 bad memory set, 2 failed motherboards, 1 failed power supply, 1 failed fan, 1 faulty case, and a...

How Do I Un-synchronize a Pair of Win 8 Computers?

Finished a new build and installed Windows Pro 8.1. Accepted the option to have it synchronized with another existing Win 8 computer... it copied over all the apps and personalization settings, which was fine. But now I want to operate the new machine's personalization options separately. If I...

Question for those who have upgraded to 8.1

If you update through the Windows Store, you'll probably keep everything. But be sure to read the FAQ on the Microsoft site... this is a preview (not final) and even Microsoft warns that bad things can happen and you need to have backups. Windows 8.1 Preview - Microsoft Windows and...

Unable to Set PIN for Windows 8 Logon

Installed Windows 8 on a new build. When I try to replace the Microsoft Account sign-on with a PIN, Windows tells me that an error has "prevented capture of your PIN. Try again later." ... or words to that effect. And, of course, "later" never comes!:( Any ideas about what is going on? I've...
