Thanks.. The one thing that pisses me off sometimes is when the machines go in for service and they dont put a code in the bios. Microsoft should require this as 90% of the time they dont issue a paper key since with a bad motherboard they cannot pull up the key and dont want to issue another.

You can order a brand new machine with windows 7. HP, Dell, Acer, And Lenovo. None of them give you that key. They are all windows 8 or 10 pro copy with downgrades. So the 7 activates similarly to the OEM activation back before windows 8 and use a generic key making it a nightmare to reload...

For being you have 2714 posts I would think by now you would have caught on that machines havent had keys on the case in i believe 3 years?

So this machine apparently has an issue where it wont boot to the cdrom in UEFI mode, Secure boot on or off. Doesnt even give the option. I loaded it with 8.1 fine in legacy mode but it wont pull the key with the old tool i use that apparently most of you say dont even use anymore. Any ideas...

Thanks for that info. I always wondered what the setup installed before it finished booting that first time when it said installing updates.

Even if it's unchecked I'm still having it try to install. Hopefully it's just a bug in the new update system they will fix.

Im also noticing that multiple machines after being reloaded now if I manage to force it to "Not" keep getting windows 10 they are failing all updates after "Update 1" I believe is what it was called?

Anybody else been seeing this? I keep telling it not to install 10 and it keeps trying to install it instead of regular updates on fresh 8.1 loads. I unselect it and it always says downloading windows 10, checking system requirements, etc etc etc.

Look into getting a tool that reads the "msdm" key. Try clicking enter key and put the key it shows you and see what it says or if it activates. I looked up your model and it looks to be a higher end laptop which means it shouldn't be a "with bing" model. Post back if using a utility to pull...

I have that code that microsoft gives out to load without a valid key. I just need to get it to showup as a OEM load inside windows. Which is what I set the cfg file to. So we will see. Loading from a external mini rom is horribly slow.

Ill double check if the current thing im trying doesnt work. I got a couple more option including a ei.cfg mod image I just burned to try if the one in it right now doesnt.

I wish I knew why they do this also. Ive used those same disks on many many machines at my shop. Before it was one in maybe 50 that wouldnt work but that would usually turn out to be that the motherboard was replaced under warranty and it didnt have a bios code saved.

Its regular core. This has even been confirmed with microsoft on the phone that the key is a valid windows 7 core oem key. I do agree with you guys tho that it should pickup the key from the bios, it has worked perfect for a long time for me. But now im starting to see alot of these brand new...

Sadly I downloaded this and on both machines it says that the disk doesnt contain windows images for the keys. One is a dell and one is a toshiba. It wont pull the code from the motherboard so I had to use a tool and write it down seperate.

It will also show the toshiba boot screen when booting the disk so it knows what brand it is. It just wont take the damn key. Oddly enough another windows 8.1 dell next to it didnt even ask for the key with the same disk. What is this bullshit anyways?
