What % do you use the desktop vs. modern UI?

How can install those games from Windows 7 (I have a W7 DVD)? I tried just copying the .exe file but that didn't work. I'd love to get the Win7 games installed...

100% Desktop, except for the occasional game of Solitaire, which is a Metro App.

Solved How can I revert back to "pre-update 1"...???

You need Microsoft's support for security updates, bug fixes, and other updates. None of these will be available for non-updated 8.1. Glad your issue seems to have cleared up.

Solved How can I revert back to "pre-update 1"...???

Microsoft is not going to support Windows 8.1 without the Update 1 installed. I believe support is going to end within a month. If I were you I'd try a clean install and see if that helps. Or as another comment suggested, go back to 8.0.

Warning - friend got BUBBLEBDOC after installing FIREFOX

Why on God's green Earth would anyone download Firefox from anywhere but firefox.com? Do people still not understand that the Internet is a cesspool of deception and infection? People, wake up!

Solved Can not restore Windows 8.1 System Image

Hello again. Just on a whim, I tried using Disk Management to mount the vhd from my Windows 8.1 System Image. "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" Not sure what happened, or where in the proceedings it happened, but I guess that's that. I am going to mark this thread solved...

Solved Can not restore Windows 8.1 System Image

Thanks for all the input/ideas everyone. To be clear, at the time I made this attempt, the only System Image on the external drive had been generated by Windows 8.1. I tried to restore it using a Windows 8.0 boot disk. It DID find the image, and started restoring. The progress bar in the...

Solved Can not restore Windows 8.1 System Image

I downloaded 8.1 installation image and booted with it. It did not find any System Images on the system. At least the Windows 8 boot found the image. Don't know what wbadmin is, but will look into it. (edits in []) [The reason I had made a Win8.1 SI in the first place:] I [had] updated my...

Solved Can not restore Windows 8.1 System Image

I made a system image from Windows 8.1 using Windows' own system image feature. I seem to be unable to restore it. I booted with the Windows 8 disc, and told it to restore from a system image. It found the image, ran a few minutes, then failed because of version mismatch (?). Not before hosing...

Classic Shell for Windows 8.1 / Win 7 lookalike

I believe not - I think work on it was discontinued some time ago. However, the same author develops StartIsBack, which I find the best of all the Start Menu replacements. StartIsBack Plus works with Windows 8.1. There is a free 30 day full-featured trial - I believe the purchase price is a...

Solved Windows Store broken - can't uninstall apps

Brink, Thanks for the link. Turns out that after a reboot, right-clicking on an installed app DID show an uninstall option. I have been encountering a few glitches in Win8.1 that are cleared in a reboot... In any case, I'll bookmark the link for future reference...

Solved Windows Store broken - can't uninstall apps

Like the title says, when I go to 'My Apps' and select an installed app, the only options are to clear the selection and INSTALL the app, which is already installed. Anyone else seeing this? Pretty awkward...

    Help Urgently Needed: iTunes

All I can suggest is to make sure you have the latest audio drivers for your laptop. Windows 8 'out of the box' had crackly audio that crackled whenever I clicked a link in my browser, until I upgraded the drivers...

Solved Weather app - no live tile?

That's what I was expecting, but was only seeing the word "Weather". However, I just completed two updates, and when I rebooted, the Weather live tile was working! So, I'll mark this one 'solved'.

Solved Weather app - no live tile?

I recently upgraded to 8.1 (actually, made a clean install), and everything seems to be working as designed. Except, on the Start Screen, although all the other apps show live tiles, the Weather app does not, showing only a plain blue background with the word "Weather" on it. The live tile...

    Oct 17 -- who's got it (W8.1) - Public release only

The install bits are in $Windows.~BT after you install, so you can copy that folder to a DVD and use it in subsequent installations, avoiding the download of 3.3 GB over and over again... you can't make a bootable disc out of it, but if you're updating an existing Win8 install, you don't really...
