You need Microsoft's support for security updates, bug fixes, and other updates. None of these will be available for non-updated 8.1. Glad your issue seems to have cleared up.

Microsoft is not going to support Windows 8.1 without the Update 1 installed. I believe support is going to end within a month. If I were you I'd try a clean install and see if that helps. Or as another comment suggested, go back to 8.0.

Brink, Thanks for the link. Turns out that after a reboot, right-clicking on an installed app DID show an uninstall option. I have been encountering a few glitches in Win8.1 that are cleared in a reboot... In any case, I'll bookmark the link for future reference...

Like the title says, when I go to 'My Apps' and select an installed app, the only options are to clear the selection and INSTALL the app, which is already installed. Anyone else seeing this? Pretty awkward...

All I can suggest is to make sure you have the latest audio drivers for your laptop. Windows 8 'out of the box' had crackly audio that crackled whenever I clicked a link in my browser, until I upgraded the drivers...
