why not try chkdsk [it will do it during next startup] schedule. it is supposed to find fault with free space also.

you can try resetting your windows. either not fully installed or corrupted somewhere.

your question is not clear. are you trying to upgrade to windows 8.1 this way you cannot do it open store there you can see upgrade to windows 8.1 back up all your data before commiting.

data being in external hdd does not affect installation.you need to connect it only when saving the data the 2 drivers may be conflicting. try removing the external drive during boot up it may help.

save all your data. i am not very sure if 32 bit install later to 64 bit version if can bring in boot troubles. first 32bit and then 64 bit may not give problems.
