but so far, even with auto ms updates disabled or turned off, I have not yet encountered any "errant" update for Win8.1 unlike with Win10

regarding 64bit/x64 KB3172729 for Win8.1, it was no longer offered after Jan. 2021 as the Jan. 2021 KB4535680 security update for Win8.1 x64 replaces it KB3172729 on 32bit/x86 Win8.x systems, on the other hand, still needs it as KB4535680 is x64/64bit only and is not available for 32bit systems

you did not say in your 1st post what kind of laptop you are using, which would have been more helpful in solving your problem

what kind of laptop do you have? perhaps change the ram/memory chips or install a new hard drive

time to replace that faulty hard drive with a new one
