This is my whole point -
WU in 8.1 never did find any updated drivers for any of my HW, and it was stuck using the generic driver.
I had to update it manually from AMD download.
As I mentioned above, this did not happen when I installed WIndows 10, it installed the proper graphics driver
Thanks for the responses. You're right the motherboard's site has nothing,
but there are plenty of WIndows 8 updates direct from Realtek for the NIC and soundcard
which install and work fine when done manually. Even the bare bones onboard (ATI Radeon 3000) graphics
wasn't installed just a...
installed a test system using the common VLK GCRJD-8NW9H-F2CDX-CCM8D-9D6T9,
the install found drivers for all my components but the drivers are old, appear the drivers
are from the install media (they're dated 2013/14)
the motherboard is a 2014 ASrock GC960-gc-gs, it has the very common...
I tried it out and looked for myself -
PC is a 2014 AMD FX-4300 system, 8GB RAM, onboard video
I used the MIcrosoft Media Creation tool and made a Windows 10 install USB stick.
Used Macrium Reflect Rescue CD to backup the 8.1 system to a removable drive.
Booted 8.1 to the desktop, inserted the...
That's interesting. I will certainly keep an eye on it. I'll probably look at CPUZ to see if I can find any memory timing
differences. The old Dell system has such a simple Bios, there are no settings like this.
Perhaps it's some combination of Dell's expertise and Intel chipset
Hi Bree, thanks for posting info about this tool, it's new to me and I will look into it.
On a positive note I enabled the AMD FX4300 "load performance defaults" bios setting.
After booting the system, and waiting 5 or 6 minutes for all the Superfetch disk activity
to complete, I started...
Both PC's running Windows Defender; I disabled it on the AMD box and I got about a second knocked off the startup time.
I tried some other apps, the old DELL was always slightly faster.
Perhaps it's the Intel chipset on the motherboard that gives it better performance in certain situations...
I'm pretty sure the AMD PC has a 7200 RPM; can you recommend a disk utility that may help with some
meaningful disk performance info? Or indeed any system benchmarks that might give an overall picture?
Perhaps there is something in the real world operation that's a factor.
The Dell is running...
I have not tried turning Superfetch off to see the impact, but I'm presenting my finding on
one particular app, comparing two different PC's.
DELL Dimension 4600 (2003) Penium 4 2800 GHz single core, 2GB Ram
AMD FX4300 based PC (2014) quad-core processor, 4GB RAM
They both have the same...
Appreciate your feedback, it's very possible your explanation is correct. I remember when this system was installed,
about 2 years ago, even then it didn't seem that it found any drivers, so I used those at the motherboard support
to get started.
I ran the MS program sigverif.exe, no unsigned...
I found a driver from the Realtek site dated 2020 that installed just fine,
while the version on the Asrock site for my motherboard is from 2013.
I know the MB sites often have much older drivers but if you search on the windows update catalog
site there are 10 -15 drivers for windows 8 if you...
But you can see these newer drivers in the Windows Update catalog webpage.
But they do not appear in the Windows update, client, neither is anything offered in device manager/
device/right click "update driver" (and no updates are found)
This is what it says in file setupapi.dev.log when you...
I don't think it ever has, or I did something that stops it. Here's an example,
motherboard Asrock 960gs-gs fx, Network chip Realtek RTL8111G, PCIe GBE family controller
The driver installed was 8.038.0015.2015 - I'm pretty sure I manually...
