OK, it's time to start a new thread:
1. Start the new thread in "General Support" and name it: Programs Stop Responding/Hang in Windows 8.1
2. Once you've started the new thread, come back here and give me the link to it.
3. Fill in the complete system information for your computer; Use Speccy...
OK, I've contacted a couple of helpers and hopefully one of them will be here shortly.
While you're waiting, if you would, post the results of your sfc/scannow for them. Also, check the rest of the things suggested in the thread.
Good morning BKRMSA and welcome to EightForums.
For what it's worth, thus far, it seems that none of our more talented helpers have noticed this thread. One reason being that it was started back in 2014 and the last post prior to yours was June 25, 2015.
I will contact a couple of helpers and...
No key except the one for an Office 365 subscription will work, Jimbo. Even those who Previewed Office 365 before the public release had to buy their own subscription. Yep, this is a new thing with Microsoft.
As to a *proper* trial later, this is the one available and I don't think it will be...

You didn't offend me at all. I admitted what I'd done wrong, which opened me up and let y'all in on it. It's great that we can laugh at our own mistakes and even encourage others to laugh at us too. That's what makes this forum so great.
Update!!!
I also had an HP dv7 that cratered about a month ago. I checked the RAM in it and it's also the same, so I took out the RAM I had gotten from the first broken laptop. Snatched the RAM out of the dv7 (2 GB per stick), put it into this dv9700 and it works! I now see 4.00 GB RAM!:dinesh...
