That's what I would say. It wouldn't detect it as an "optical drive" though, just another HDD. And sorry to say, but that is typical behaviour of HP laptops. They are bad build quality except for the ProBook business line. Good luck.

Your safest bet is probably to clone the NEW hdd to your SSD and replace. Then yes you can have the new hdd as a backup.

Why not wait 2-3 mos when Win10 will be out and its a free upgrade. Dont bother wasting money on an OS that will be outdated in less than 6 months.

You said the graphics card wasn't UEFI compatible. Have you tried removing the graphics card and just using the motherboard integrated graphics?
