Just had a client's PC set was still on 8 and having problems. (Really???)
Hadn't worked on 8 or 8.1 in a while and took me a bit to find the 8.1 upgrade was through the Store.:o
Owners are older couple who only do the basics, email, reservations, a little shopping and GAMES, of which Solitaire...
I went through some of the basics again and somewhere along the line, the PC Settings opened.
I think it "may" have been resetting ownership of the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT,
making sure that "ALL APPLICATIONS PACKAGES" had the proper Permissions.
Thanks again, Shawn, for your time and patience.
Just finished the 8.1 upgrade and I'm back at the same place.
The Store App just flashes and the others say "This app can't open."
I went to regedit and found Packages Owner was Administrator.
Changed it to SYSTEM as I did in the 8 after Refresh except this time it didn't work.
Back to square...
As Wiley Coyote would say, Genius, Sheer genius! Thank you, Brink.
So the Refresh worked, only after registering the Store App, which worked ONLY after changing Permissions of the "Package" registry key.
When I went to register the app at first, I got the 0x8004064A Error.
Changing the Owner...
Forgot and thought I had to go through PC Settings.
Anyway, did the Refresh and it didn't do much.
The only apps I have now on the Start Screen are Internet Explorer, Store, File Explorer and Desktop.
I just added my Classic Shell and they're also on the screen now.
The Store App still...
Hi Shawn, (Don't you ever sleep)
I had done all in that tutorial but I went all over it again. No luck.
I thought I may have caught it in the permissions settings where you say "If you get the 0x8007064A, (Which I did), ......Packages Registry Key below does not have "SYSTEM" as its owner.
Can't open PC Settings and others from the Start Screen.
Help and Tips, Reading Lists, Food and Drink, Health and Fitness, One Note and Skype all have a black "x" and say "This app can't be opened" when clicked.
"Store" and "PC Settings also have a black "x" but "flash" and disappear when...
I've had a number of these where the customer, on setting up a new Windows 8/8.1, will use a local account since they don't have or know what a MS account is.
When they finally get the MS acct, somehow the logon winds up to be a local first, with incorrect password, and a left...
As a Test?
That fixed it.
When I put the check in, booted to the MS account logon. password needed. Password entered. boot OK. no local acct.
Did netplwiz and unchecked password needed.
Now booted to Desktop w/out password.
So, by putting the check in, reboot, take the check out, clears the...
When this PC was originally setup, owner created a local account, of which the password is lost.
A Microsoft account was set up after.
At boot, the local account comes up with incorrect password displayed. I can click on the left arrow and access the Microsoft account. I have to enter the...
All of a sudden I have 2 Users at boot.
I'm set up with only one user with my Microsoft account.
The first one is just my User name and below
"The User Name or password is incorrect. Try again."
Clicking OK takes me to another screen with my User name, (not my Microsoft account email), with...
I don't know why this caused me such a headache, bouncing between Legacy and UEFI.
With UEFI and Secure Boot enabled, I used a Windows 8 Rescue disk, booted to CMD and used diskparted to clean.
After that, the first "System" CD went followed by the first "Recovery" disc.
I have an Acer V3-731. Owner's nephew somehow put W-8 Enterprise on.
Received a complete set of Recovery CDs from Acer.
I want to do a complete recovery, no data.
First CD, "System" started and said needed UEFI
The BIOS is set
Secure Boot Mode-Standard
