Windows 8.1 support from Microsoft will end on January 10, 2023

As a reminder, Windows 8.1 will reach end of support on January 10, 2023, at which point technical assistance and software updates will no longer be provided. If you have devices running Windows 8.1, we recommend upgrading them to a more current, in-service, and supported Windows release. If devices do not meet the technical requirements to run a more current release of Windows, we recommend that you replace the device with one that supports Windows 11.

Microsoft will not be offering an Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Windows 8.1. Continuing to use Windows 8.1 after January 10, 2023 may increase an organization’s exposure to security risks or impact its ability to meet compliance obligations.

As far as I am aware using an ISO to perform an in-place upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 still gets activated with a digital licence for Windows 10. It certainly did for a Windows 7 machine I upgraded last week, I don't see why Windows 8.1 should be any different.

WOAH there big guy! The Kentucky Long Rifles would be ashamed of you. Why are you so quick to give up on ONE of the few really good OS's of this century.
* Well, its good, if you run the Classic Shell and then tweak and tune it a little. I don't mind....I've been doing that with Microsoft OS's since Windows 98.
This IS after all, the Windows Eight forum, or so it says at the top of my screen. All of us here should be Dedicated to Running Windows 8.1 till the cows come home, so to speak. And NOT jump off to Windows 10 at the first little note from MS.

I have Windows 10 on two spare HD's, for testing and familiarization purposes, but no way in this world or the next will it ever be my everyday OS.
If I were forced, at gunpoint, to run Windows 10, I could....I know how, but I wouldn't be happy about it.

I discovered Windows 8.1 after I was a moderator on the old Windows 8.0 forum for some time. It was like a breath of fresh air. It worked great, and I didn't have to go around plugging up security holes, like I've had to do in Windows 10.

Apologies.....I do tend to natter on.

Y'all have a great 4th of July now, Y'hear?

Kinda sad to see Windows 8.1 go just like that. Hope manufactures won't drop support for 8.1 immediately. I'll probably upgrade once I get myself a new computer.

You can install Server 2012 R2 updates to extend the EOL date to October
Pointless in my opinion, Windows 8's security is good enough 😆 Haven't had any issues with security for past 6 years now.

Maybe to best answer the Topic of this thread, I should just ask "What Support?". Strange, but I've never had any. From the first minute that I installed 8.1, MS updates were shut off. And I don't have, and never will have, a "Microsoft Account"....sure don't need one to install 8.1.
The only update I ever got was for Windows Defender.
I really don't know that it does any good, but I run it anyway, because it came built into 8.1.
If I had to download that one, and install it, I probably would not be running it. I get the best action from "Super Anti Spyware", which keeps my PC clean of Tracking Cookies and Trojans.

I have the deepest respect for MS Fan Boys. But, that's just not me. Sorry Mates!

Y'all have a Happy 4th now, Y'hear?

Speaking of MS Updates:
I have turned off Updates, in the control panel, but yet, twice now when I went to turn off my PC, I got a message on my otherwise blank screen, to NOT Turn off my computer because the OS was busy getting updates. WTF?
So I remembered the program that I have in my Windows 10 Utilities Folder, that is supposed to permanently KILL the MS Updates. The program ran just fine here on 8.1 despite the fact it's supposed to be for Win-10, and I've had no more unwanted updates since running that program.

There's one more program that I've run on 8.1.....it's called simply "Never ten".

Cheers Mates, Happy 4th!

Haha, true. Without updates, Windows 8.1 is great. No automatic updates, no telemetry, nothing :) And no "Upgrade to Windows 10" nags :)

Oh great ! But, uh Server 2012 R2 is still supported so you can't really obtain ESU Updates ( At least, for now ) ?

Tried Server 2012 R2 update on my Windows 8.1 VM, installed flawlessly.
