Win8.1 waking up from hibernation .... waiting forever

Good morning,

A laptop with Windows 8.1 sometimes locks itself in 'Waiting' mode with rotating cursor after a regular hybernation command chosen in the previous session.

Unfortunately sometimes it takes forever. Today it is one of those times.

In the past, ahead of these events, brutally I chose to switch the power button off. Then waiting a 30 seconds and with all of the leds off, pressing again the power button, Windows 8.1 regularly booted.

Today the laptop is locked in 'waiting' mode even after switched the PC off one time.

What would you suggest, please?

Carl

Edit: I pressed again much longer the power button and it rebooted again...this time.

But which maintenance could be done in order to obtain a flawlessly wake up from hybernation?

A scandisk and hard disk SMART status are fine. Also a sfc /scannow reported no integrity violations.
The powercfg -a command shows exactly the laptop screnshot shown at
Sleep States - Available on Your Windows 8 PC
Power plan is high performance.

Is there a reason you prefer hibernation over sleep besides battery... just wonderin'. On a slow drive hibernation (IMO) will be more clunky, not as quick to come back to life as say an SSD would pop back to life after hibernating. Sleep, OTOH, simply consults RAM and your laptop is up and running. Hibernation does save more power (closer to OFF), whereas Sleep is more like Standby, not fully off.

If you don't have a realistic need to have your work waiting for you after a time away from the laptop, either just turn it off or maybe try putting it to Sleep. If you haven't upgraded your HDD to SSD that may shave off some wake up time. Make sure you have plenty of space on your drive, the sys file Hibernation uses can get very big.

Hi MGhee,
Thanks for your help. I actually never evaluated to use Sleep mode! Effectively it is a nice solution. It is working flawlessly for my needs and obviously faster than Hibernation.

you could try contacting the manufacturer of the laptop to see if a bios/firmware update would fix some of the hibernation problems

I almost rarely use the hibernation feature on my dad's toshiba satellite c55dt laptop with win8.1 and it already had the latest bios for that model and in those few times while attempting to wake from hibernation it would get stuck on a black screen for several hours.

Unfortunately the manufacturer did not even provide the BIOS/fw upgrades for Spectre or Meltdown; it is several years there are no updates at all. However hopefully (and touching wood) hybernation is working these days. Ditto, the Sleep mode suggested by MGhee.
