PC slowed down considerably esp. in regular boot mode; safe mode is much better but still slowed a bit

My browser lags horribly, clicking X to close a video player takes 7-8 seconds to actually close player, right clicking an item in windows explorer takes 4-5 seconds to bring up menu; I don't notice anything in task manager; have run Norton, Avast, Malwarebytes, IOBit malware fighter; nothing has been detected except cookies

Right now, the displaying of text as I type is not lagging behind my typing (the typing shows no lag).

I didn't find the comprehensive Malware bytes log that shows all processes.

I also don't have another program currently that will show all hidden proceses as well (I donb't think task manager is good at that)

Now and then my browser window will be minimized even though I didn't minimize it or change focus to another wimdow or my desktop,

Video playing (using Polplayer and a couple of other players (I suspect all players would have this issue), takes longer to open and play as it should, every now and then *3-4 minutes) during playback, the video will go slowly one frame at a time for 10 seconds or so then normal play will resume); during the frame at a time, the audio "chunk"that was being processed will repeat)

I have used a program beside malwarebytes to show all processes (it used color coding) and was great, but I don't know the name of it.

Safe mode quite a bit better than regular mode but now and then I'll have lagging browser activity.

It seems that something that is the issue eventually is running in safe mode too but doesn't show noticably for a loner time than regular mode. I mainly use mt pc for job hunting, so I have been in safe mode most of the time. Of course Norton and others must be manuallt syarted in safe mode and not all functionality is allowed to run.

I ran a chkdsk yesterday and after about 14 minutes cancelled it. No bad sectors were shown. It seems to be software slowing. Ie could be a conflict somehow. Started 4 days ago.

I have a 5 yr old gateway win 8.1

BTW, Most of the time I have a browser (I use Chrome) window open, it doesn't lag, which is actually like a system freeze when it happens)

I should also let you knowI have been getting a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD a couple times per week. I ran a program (don't remember the name but got it from CNET) to check for driver updates. There were 8 or 9 it showed. I told it to update, rebooted, and noticed my audio wasn't working (it was right before the driver updates (of which I think two were for audio). I did a system restore to the point right before the driver updates. - audio back and have got the BSOD once since then. I don't know if the two issues are connected. I also am geeting failures on some wondows updates (don't know which ones). Also I just remembered that on pressing F12 during boot to select safe mode, the boot options were unavailabe. The next time I rebooted (which was yesterday), I just was expecting normal boot to occur. A different boot option screen happened to be shown (not the F12 options screen).I was able to select safe mode. Today I used msconfig to select safe mode at boot up so I can search job sites and email employment recruiter w/o nearly as much lahhing - a security issue though

seems to me that you have a lot of programs, etc. that are dragging you down.....how much RAM do you have? I would definitely do another Disk Cleanup and don't close it out....and get rid of a lot of 'stuff' from there...get Glary Tools and Speed Disk and Defrag. If you aren't running at least 10GB of RAM you're defeating a lot of programs and slowing your system down. Spend the bucks and increase RAM to the max. If you have a lot of doc's on your desktop, put them in a folder as it's faster to boot up with folders than shortcuts and documents. Hope this helps. cya

First of all run CMD with Admin rights and check your system integrity with a sfc/ scannow .
Then running a non-reliable software to check drivers could not be a great idea. You may not know which garbage could be installed together with the supposedly up-to-date drivers.

So I would run a manual scan with your antivirus and also an external AV scanner such as Emsysoft Start Emergency Kit Scanner.

Finally, on top of magnus1492 suggestions, consider a SSD instead of HD.
