KB2919355 Issues:

Here is my problem:

I have an Acer Aspire x64 running Windows 8.1. It has been a fantastic machine for
the last three years, with absolutely no problems whatsoever. None (I used to be an
XP fan, and was always reinstalling, which was fine because the process was
reliable)

Two weeks ago this machine failed - not sure why - I think it may have been a
massive World of Warcraft update, but I can't be certain. Memory leaks, continuous
hangs, blue wheel of death, Task Manager failure, Start/Shutdown/Restart failure
etc. It was broken.

For the last fortnight I have done three Refresh/Installs and two completely
reformatted factory reset installs, and I am frustrated beyond belief that I cannot
get the machine working reliably. The irony of searching help/updates on an Android
phone is not lost on me ...

Windows update, and associated sites, is fundamentally broken. My main problem is
KB2919355 ... this is the root cause of everything. Most pertinently it seems to
disallow System Restore points - I create them, I see them, and then when I need
them they are not there. I had the "could not create scheduled task/error
0x80071A91" message many times, and that set me off all over the place.

KB2919355 will not install, it fails to install or it does install and then the system
hangs/crashes again. I have run Windows Update Troubleshooter many times (which
wipes update memory so you have to start all over again) I have located the
KB2919355 page on Microsoft website ... this is a fresh install of Windows here ... I
haven't uninstalled any bloatware, I haven't Power Shell/remove Metro Apps ... I
just want to do the updates first on a virgin install of Win 8.1.

IE11 ... freshly installed - doesn't allow pop ups, so won't download the patches ...
from MS own site. Tools/Internet Options doesn't work in IE 11, so I can't allow pop
ups, the KB update for IE doesn't want to know. I can't uninstall IE, I cant uninstall
KB2919355 ... nothing works through DISM /online

I have spent two weeks looking at every fix on every forum, and each time the
machine gets more unreliable and Windows breaks even more. I note that
KB2919355 has been an issue for four years, and even MS suggest installing
components one at a time, in a specific order, yet their own software/browser will
not allow download their patches from their site. That is insane! Why are they so
bloody mindedly determined to absolutely completely and utterly break everything
they can?

Is there anywhere ... anywhere at all ... a "KB2919355 Problems? Click this to JUST
FIX IT" option anywhere? Please?

I need to add:

KB2919442 - will not install - "not applicable to your computer"

KB2919355 - the part files, with clearcomressionflag.exe - and downloaded previously with another browser

Clear Compression works but not KB2919355 (the first part of the file set) - "not applicable to your computer"

So ... even "the fix" is broken and it will not install. Massive problem is I use Libre Office, and it will not install without these critical updates to Win 8.1.

Thanks,
A.

Yes please - if this will fix my problem. I just searched that text and see it available on some torrent sites ... not comfy with those, so an official/semi official MSDN link would be much appreciated.

1. Direct Microsoft links

Update 3, non-refresh bootable ISO (Ready to Use)

Win8.1_English_x64_Core_Pro

Win8.1_English_x32_Core_Pro

Link expire: 09/16/2018 00:38:39 MSK

2. For refresh (Current) ISO, you'll have to grab ESD's and decrypt them into bootable ISO before they can be used

All links EN-US x64

Win8.11_Core

Win811_CoreSingleLanguage

Win811_Professional

Win811_Professional_Windows_Media_Center

For N and CN versions, or any other Languages, x86 etc reply to this post with what you want.

For decrypting:

Grab this tool-
Wimlibx-8

Extract and copy the downloaded ESD image in the same folder as the tool.
Right click on decrypt.cmd and 'Run as administrator'
From the presented menu select options 1 for standard bootable ISO or if you wanna save space and no need to further service the image, select 2

Note: You will need KB2999226 to run the modern apps correctly (the ones specifically made for Win 10 like Adobe and stuff)
Grab it from here-
Update for Universal C Runtime in Windows
This update is under 1 MB only. But you can chose to ignore it if you want, windows will install it even if you disable Updates.

3. I've made my own ISO with all the not very nice stuff removed based on 9600.17053.winblue_refresh.141120-0031
it's just 1 GB in size and after fresh install it takes 4.5 GB and only uses 550 MB of RAM, you know kinda like XP. Don't be fooled this runs fast as rubbish even faster then XP. You can even use on 2 GB ram machine and feel like you have 16 GB Ram. haha.

If you want I can link it to you be advised this is in Arabic language only.

Hi - thanks for this.

Not sure if it's what I need, but it is something that hasn't been suggested before ... just not quite sure what/how I need to use it. I'm guessing download the ISO (that I need) burn to bootable media, and then ...

Boot from media? Will I be reinstalling over my current set up, or will this allow a fix over the top of what I have installed already. Or will this be another fresh install from scratch?

I appreciate this, thanks.

Okay so I wouldn't prefer that edition. There's nothing wrong with it but the problem is it has two servicing stacks build in. The stack Windows installs (Core / Pro) will depend upon the key you insert during WinPE operation.

Option 2 with link to ESD's is a better choice. I've detailed the entire procedure to decrypt the ESD's. It's just elementary, no special skills required. It's version matches with what Microsoft is currently shipping in market / OEM. The final ISO, that is after decrypting is a bit-by-bit clone of what you would purchase in market in form of Original Microsoft DVD. Think of the linked ESD's as Microsoft Repository. All those are direct links to Microsoft servers so be rest assured you're dealing genuine.

Whatever you choose, it's all good. I give too much attention to the details.

Yeah you got that right. You can just double click the ISO image and it will be mounted by the Windows (feature introduced in Win 8) in a virtual drive and then you can browse to the ISO directory and double click the "setup" to initiate the installation procedure. This will install the new OS over your current OS with old OS files residing in C:/Windows.old

This is not only lazy but also very bad and very inefficient way to install. I would never talk to the person who installs in this way. This procedure is for learning impaired, instagram crowd only, who should not be allowed to own / use a computer.

The Correct way is the burn the ISO to a USB with "format drive" option enabled. A simple yet efficient tool to accomplish this is available here-
Wintobootic v.2.2.1
Rufus not recommended but again whatever you're comfortable with. After the ISO is copyied to the USB, restart your PC with option to boot from USB rather then Hard Disk. All different motherboards manufactures have their own special key to choose boot options during startup, here you press the key and select the USB you inserted as your preferable boot choice. You can also select your boot options from Bios. Right keywords in the Google will help you with this.

After you've booted just follow the on screen instructions, choose different options and let the Windows do it's thing until you arrive at the desktop.

Good luck.

Edit: I forgot to mention that when you arrive at choosing the volume to install the windows on, make sure to select the volume and click format and delete everything on it before proceeding.

Well, that didn't work either - it was promising, and yes, the system install was much cleaner and it is refreshing to have a Win install without any of the bloat (why can't they have this as default or at least optional?)

However, the fundamental problem remains - I cannot install update KB2919355, which is required for many things: Libre Office, Acrobate Reader for starters, but presumably due to the nature of the update it is key to running most things.

So, with the freshest of fresh installs (running very fast with the Win Blue install) I try to run Windows Update ... and it hangs ... and hangs ... and hangs ... continually searching for installed updates on the computer (I haven't installed any) and it just doesn't move along.

The same old steps and fixes, nothing is working to repair update, and even a complete WinUpdateFix script makes no difference. The Update Troubleshooter doesn't troubleshoot, and way beyond belief ... MS's own standalone WinUpdateInstaller (KB3138615) ... wait for it ... searching for updates before it can install ... it is still searching as I type, ninety minutes later.

And Microsoft's "help" is anything but ... the same old steps, the same old repairs, the same old system tools ... and the same old "default" response ... try refreshing/reinstalling Windows. I am on my ninth reinstall, it is not working.

I simply cannot go through this again, I was crying with frustration on Thursday ... why will Windows not just work? Why will update not simply update? Update is key to everything ... why can't they just create a "update broken/fix now" button ... that doesn't involve checking for updates? The "app/control" - just simply dowload/replace ... it can't be difficult.

In despair, and like so many before me, I have now finally decided to give up on Windows and switch to Linux. Win XP was perfect, it took a while to bed down properly, but it was the zenith of operating systems ... it did me well for fifteen years, and I loved it. And then they went and decided they had something "better."

So, thanks to those who tried to help across many different forums, I do appreciate it but ultimately the problem is with Microsoft and how they treat their customers. Windows was supposed to be easy, it was supposed to be good, but now it is neither. I will miss it, but my sanity is worth more than persisting with a broken relationship.

If you've installed the linked ISO's you already have "April 2014 roll-up" a.k.a KB2919355. I told you in post no 2 about an additional update for C Runtime to run the modern apps correctly. You could also get the newer C++ Runitime version 2017. That's what it is all about. Those runtimes and April Roll Up.

Anyways, sorry to see you go. Totally agree about Microsoft.

After ... unbelievably! ... my fresh Linux Mint install went and crashed (yes, really) I decided to have one last try with Win 8.1 again (I'm getting a new machine early next year so will, regrettably, probably try and learn to live with Win 10)

It installed from a tenth fresh install, I patiently waited whilst every single update installed, in its own good time, and allowed everything to run at its own pace ... I started this on Thursday morning, it's now Saturday morning, and other than my install of Libre Office, Acrobat and WOW, I have installed nothing else.

Two days, to get an OS up and running properly (almost) - with sleeps and eating breaks, obviously. I still have problems (though not update ones) - now it is taking 3-5 minutes to get from the boot screen to the log in screen (using MS/Outlook credentials) and then a further two minute delay for the cursor/input to register and finally logging in.

Will look elsewhere to try and resolve this, although reluctant to change anything now as the machine is, albeit a delayed start up, actually working once again.
