I am trying to set no updates in Windows 8.1 but it says I am not the administrator. I only have a guest and an administrator account on the computer and am logged in as administrator. What do I need to do to get authorization to change the update settings?

Is this your work computer or your home computer? If it is your work computer, there is likely a policy that your company's IT department has set, which you will not be able to change. And if you manage to change it without permission, you may end up getting fired for violating company policy.

Are you sure you have an administrator account on the computer? The message you are getting indicates that you don't have an administrator account.

It is my home computer. I only have two accounts which were set up when I bought the computer.....guest and administrator. When I log in, I always log into the administrator.

Create a new account, and give it administrator rights. Log in with that account rather than with the actual administrator account. Then try to change the update settings.

Is your 'Administrator' account truly an 'Administrator' status account? It may be that it is named 'Administrator' but has only "Local account" status instead of "Administrator" status? Also an Administrator account should be password protected and if it isn't it may be that Windows will stop you changing things until it does have a password or otherwise anyone could log into the account and change things.

A local account and an administrator account are two separate issues:
  • A local account means that Microsoft doesn't have a copy of your login information.
  • An administrator account means that you have full rights on the computer.
What you need is an administrator account; it doesn't matter whether that account is a local account or a Microsoft account.

You can set up an administrator account without a password; and this won't put any restriction on what you can do when logged in under that account. The problem is, the account will be a lot easier to hack, since it doesn't have a password. So it is better to have a password, but it not required to have a password.
