    Lost context menu

I lost a context menu in the desktop file explorer. The "New" right-click context menu is missing some entries. Right now when I right-click, I only get "Folder" as an option in the "New"context menu. This is on my Samsung slate running the 90 day RTM evaluation. I have the same evaluation running in a VMware virtual machine. There I get the correct items in the "New" right-click context menu, such as Text file, Compressed Folder etc.

Does anyone know how to get the options in the context menu back?

    Hello Steve,

What's the full path of the folder that this happening with?

This would be normal in these root directory system folders:

    • C:\Program Files
    • C:\Program Files (x86)
    • C:\Users
    • C:\Windows (all folders in here)

    Hope this helps for now,
    Shawn

I finally bothered to check that feature on my other copy of Windows 8 running in a VM. The same limitation existed on the VM as on my Samsung Slate. It seems that the new items context menu works under My Documents and not much of anywhere else. Is this a new limitation of Windows 8 or did it exist with Windows 7? I shut off all UAC on Windows 7 machine, so maybe I never saw the limitation there. It was very disconcerting the other night, to try and create a zip archive under Program Files, and be unable to.

Is there a workaround to disable this limitation?

It's been that way since Vista. Those root system directories are considered protected, so you would need to create the ZIP archive on your desktop first, then move it into "Program Files" and approve.

Unless I misunderstood the question - I don't have any trouble doing it in win7. Can't be bothered booting into win8 to check.

Maybe to do with having uac off.

    Hi Simon,

It looks like since you have a D drive letter instead of C, that may be why you are able to. Are you accessing them from within another OS (dual boot)?

I think Steve meant to have those options in the root directory system folders below instead. To bad it's not an option for these.

    • C:\Program Files
    • C:\Program Files (x86)
    • C:\Users
    • C:\Windows (all folders in here)

No, I am doing it from within 7 , D is the win7 o/s letter.

As far as I remember I have always been able to do that - with Vista too iirc.

Could be to do with turning off UAC.

Ah, ok. Having UAC disabled is most likely what allows you to then.

Disabling UAC in Windows 8 doesn't work the same as in Vista and Windows 7 anymore though. The "Never Notify" (bottom level) doesn't completly disable UAC in Windows 8 like it does in Vista and Windows 7 since doing so would break the Store apps.

Yeah in win 8 , you might need to turn it off properly via the registry - then some of those app. things don't work as I recall.
