System tray apps take a long time to load

Windows 8 boots up pretty quickly, but it takes a notably long time (compare to Windows 7) for it to show up the system tray applications. In Windows 7 it is almost instant.

Is this Microsoft's problem or the app maker's problem?

Also, the apps seem to load sequentially. Is there a way to rearrange them so that the ones I want load quickly. I need AutoHotKey, Logitech Setpoint and Logitech Gaming Software to load up ASAP. Rest can take their sweet time.

Also this is what the TaskManager's startup performance analysis looks like.

Having this *feature* means that Microsoft can blame the app maker for the slow startup. But why doesn't that happen in Windows 7? Is this because Desktop is another app, and stuff don't really get priority?

Also I still cannot find why PeerBlock would not start when placed in the classic Startup folder.

My question is, in Windows 7, did you have the SAME exact apps running at startup?

Also, it might be due to the fact you have many startup items running at once, or maybe some disk fragmentation. I'd disable some of your startup items like apple push, you don't really need that running at startup.

Actually I had more than that in Windows 7. This is after I removed some from the list using CCleaner.

This is on an SSD. Does not matter whether it is fragmented or not.

I'm going to guess that it's something in how the Desktop is done that makes the notification area load slower...

And if I should say, you know you're living in the year 2012 when you're on a forum and a thread doesn't only have screenshot, but a picture of a setup and even a video! :D

How else would anyone believe what I say. :D

Is there a way to reorder the startup list?

It doesn't seem like it....

I'm kind of thinking it could just be a mere UI glitch at the loading speed. Or...........wait a minute. Windows 8's startup time is slimmed down as much as physically possible especially at restart. Windows starts at the Start Screen. I know for a fact that if you have more than a few startup entries on a hard drive based system, that when you immediately click on Desktop, there is a slight lag for everything to appear. So I bet that technically, Windows still is partly booting or isn't fully booted whereas with 7, Windows already has the Desktop UI already loaded per se, and startup items are starting up. Like, Windows 8 boots as fast as possible as to get you into the UI so it doesn't FEEL like it's taking a longer time to boot when you're just sitting there looking at the boot screen.

If you can understand that... :geek:

i understand what you mean. that is kinda ugly way to speed things up eh?

i wonder if there will be updates to the items that has a high startup impact. :/

I bet most of the stuff has a delayed start. That is why windows 8 is actually responsive right away... although mine booted in about 20s, its starting to load a wee bit slower now.. but still quite fast.

Hopefully it gets better.

I also have this issue, using an SSD drive. My work laptop has Windows 8 (Dell Latitude E6430) and it's noticeable to me because I use Object Dock, and it's the last thing to load and it's annoying how long it takes. I've disabled most of my other startup items too.

My desktop at home is way faster. It has Windows 7, and it is my gaming machine, but the dock comes up pretty much instantly after logging in.

no, really 12 minutes. The actual hdd working and real program loading took like 2-3 seconds (dropbox, setpoint, autohotkey, maybe a couple more)
not a clue what can be the culprit, haven't even used this win8 installation that much

So Windows just waited there for 12 minutes without doing anything before the system tray apps started loading? That's hardcore! It's funny how Task Manager would show what programs are causing the delays but in my case I would have to disable more than half of my programs according to that claim. Nonsense.

I had a longish 'hang' with Win8 on a SSD during appearance of the system tray icons, and it was totally cured last week when I updated my Radeon driver to the latest one. It was already uptodate with the previous driver. So my hang was something to do with the graphics driver.

you mean Windows 8 is as fast as Windows 7 at loading system tray icons?

I haven't actually measured, but I'm seeing better load times too nowadays. I will measure when I go home. If it was patched with an update, I would like to know which update did so.
