Some help in a high HDD usage?

    Hi!

I've installed Windows 8 Release Preview x64 recently, but i'm noticing that my HDD is almost always using from 0% to 100% every 5 seconds (approximately), this is very annoying cause it makes a little system freeze every time... Can someone give me a tip?

    Thanks in advance...

You are using x64 windows with only 2GB of installed memory, and Windows is swapping data to the pagefile rather too often .

The real solution is to increase the onboard memory to 4GB or more.

Otherwise, the x86 version would behave better as it will be more conservative with memory use.

Hey fafhrd, thank you for replying.
But i've been using x64 systems since the Windows 7 in this machine and i never had this type of problem... Here in the Task Manager, when the disk is showing 100% of activity, there's no process that is using this amount of HDD, but the process System (ntoskrnl.exe) is getting me attention, it always have a little usage variance. So, this can show that is a issue with my pagefile and amount of fisical memory? (Otherwise, i might try to put more memory or use x86 here)

Well I have it running with 2 gig in a virtual enviorment and it runs quick, my suggestion is install the copy fresh and start over. Sometimes OS's just dont install right I just bought a new laptop 2 weeks again and in one day reloaded it because of issues. It happens, if you reload the OS from scratch and still have to same problem let me know and Ill tryo to help if I can, but because its a release preview there are still some issues so try that first :-)

I don't know what the mechanism for that would be, nor do I know how reinstalling would help it.

To the OP: Download the sysinternals.com suite and run Process Monitor. It will give you insight as to what is chewing up the disk. It could be any number of things; Microsoft loves to grind the disk continuously, and it has created multiple things that do it. I haven't found one yet that didn't improve my computer by turning it off (e.g. Distributed Link Tracking Client, StupidFetch, ReadyBoot, etc) or avoiding the conditions that feed it (e.g. putting anything in the Music library).

i had the same problem with my secondary sata drive (primary is a ssd drive). take a look at the event viewer and check if you get warnings from storahci. i had many of them (event-id 129) in my system log. although windows isn’t installed on the sata drive it slowed down windows 8 and the hard disk led was lit permanently.
i could solve this problem by changing the power plan from balanced to high performance. since then all storahci-warnings and the hard disk problems disappeared.

The RP x64 installation I'm using runs on a pc with 1.5GB ram without problems.

There is no constant HDD activity, all services are at default with Superfetch set to ON (recommended).

There must be something else interfering, it also depends what programs you're using and if they (all together of not) exceed the 2GB limit when running, then yes the HDD swaps a lot. That doesn't happen here because there are no games or processes that need too much memory.

On 2GB systems, 1.5GB can be easily allocated to running programs without loss in performance.

I'm using Intel I7 desktop Z68 motherboard, with 16GB memory windows 8 x64 on an SSD (C: ) and have a similar problem. If i am watching a movie or doing any kind of media work (propellerhead reason) my mechanical media drive (D: ) randomly goes 100% usage for about 60-120 seconds and the systems stutters until it comes back. Once its happened it repeats more regularly until I reboot . It happens after about an hour of use so maybe its a memory leak somewhere which shows more regularly with less memory.

Clearly there is a problem because its mentioned in several places on the web but clearly not everyone has it. I upgraded from Win 7, have a Nvidia card and use an ASIO sound card if that helps anyone.

If Windows manages the pagefile, then it has to be assigned to the D: mechanical drive instead of the SSD. This is normal behavior.
Systems stutters here on i7 laptop also. When the memory drops, I assume it's also related to the pagefile. Memory leaks should cause increase in the memory size.

It depends how much memory you've got installed and this is more likely to be normal.
