    defrag

    I had a 1TB HDD and replaced it with a 500GB one.
I have downloaded Google Drive and Google Takeout is in Docs.

When I defrag unlike before, it says '12% and needs to be defragged' so I do.
It won't go any lower than 6 % and the machine is slower too. I have run MBAM etc and cleaned..
Is it b/c files are in use?
I have a similar laptop with the same features to a T and it defrags to zero.
Can you tell me what to do to attain zero like the laptop?
    TY

I've rarely reached Zero level, even in Safe Mode. If Windows operations are aok, I recommend not attempting any further defragging. For some time now, I've abandoned zero-level defragging; instead, I only defrag to whatever level it "settles to," just before I do my OS and data partition backups. Defragging comes close to "thrashing the HD," longevity is not enhanced.

It could be system files, that are fragmented.
I would recommend creating an image of the disk, then turn around and reimage your disk.
That is the best way to defrag a large disk.
Because the system files are offline, when you reimage, everything get's put in it's place

Its how you defrag you can just put all the file contiguous that one way but there are other setting that put files need most can be put on the fastest part of the disk to speed up normal operations many files will be rarely used so they can go on the slowest part of the disk. You should get close to 0% if its defragged when idle if you browsing you downloading files all the time. Some good defraggers can run a boot time defrag loading before windows to move any system files that need moving

I used Defraggler and it read 0% . I analyzed with Windows and it too said 0%.
    Defraggler seemed set it straight.
I was told to use one or the other as they use different algorithms but am not sure which to use..

It's better to create an image of how your system is now, then reimage using it. That way it will get defragged and you won't have to update anything after.

I used defraggler to get back on track and now Windows reads 0%. I will continue to use only Windows because of the algorithms..
    I have updated my images.
