Configuring System Restore for Externald HDD?

I see that system protection is off for external HDD's by default. I was wondering what the pros/cons are about this.

I use several X'HDD's for file backup/sync, not imaging as it is not required for this particular unit.

System Protection essentially takes a restore point for System Restore during major events. It's meant to automate this sort of task.

If you don't use Windows System Restore then there's not much point to having it enabled. I've replaced Windows System Restore with Comodo Time Machine, and later Rollback Rx.

If you use System Restore it's a handy feature. It's always recommended that you have it turned on for your primary drive; but for External Hard Drives I can't see it mattering much.

Since you don't disk image, I guess it really comes down to if you want a restore/backup solution for your PC/Ext. HDD. WSR and Sys Protection are a decent choice, but don't be afraid to disable if you don't need it or have a better plan in place.

    Thanks ThelTGuru.

I have no plans at present to start using anything else. I'm guessing that enabling System Protection for external hard drives is only needed if I install programs on them, which I would never do, rather than just using them as storage devices.

The best value of System Restore is when something messes up your OS, which should ONLY be on your C: drive.
Or if you try out a new program and it installs a ton of spyware, then you can do a system restore to dump all that crap and get back to a good running system.

I test a LOT of software, and I'm forever getting stuck with crap I don't want, so a quick System Restore can get me back to before the bad thing happened. I rely on it so much, that I run a script in my startup folder, that forces the system to make a new Restore Point, so I get at least One restore Point every day. The Restore Points only stack up just so far and then start dropping off in the old Bit Bucket. No, they will not take over the entire hard drive, like they did in Windows ME. (what a mess that was!)

Another nice thing about System Restore, is that it's already IN you don't have to download and install any more software, and take a chance of getting something Bad in the process. Eh?

    Cheers Mates!
